Previously, you needed to be rooted to back up your precious app data. This could be a high score in the game or the thousands of SMS messages you have sent and received over the past year. But those days are long gone. We’ve been able to backup app data via PC on unrooted phones for quite some time now. But the process has never been so simple.
Now, Koushik Dutta, creator of ClockworkMod recovery (recovery of my choice) has updated his Helium backup app. This update makes backing up app data (but not the app itself) easy using just your Android phone.
First, you need to enable debugging and connect your phone to your PC/Mac/Linux (also has a Chrome extension) so that it can run some code that activates the backup features. But once that’s done, you don’t need to connect to a PC. You can back up app data to internal storage, external SD card, or cloud storage like Dropbox or Box (requires Helium Premium).
How to enable backup via Mac
We’ve talked about Android apps that allow backup via Windows, but Mac users don’t always get the support they need (they’re like Samsung users of the desktop world when it comes to solutions). Android sync method). So while Helium can also be used on Windows, here we are going to talk about how to do it via Mac.
Side note: If you are using Windows, you need to install the Android drivers first. Without Helium application will not work. Learn more about it here. The Mac app doesn’t need you to do that.
Download the Mac client from the website and open it. If you haven’t enabled installing third-party apps, you’ll get a pop-up saying the app could not be installed.
Go System Preferences -> Protect Click the lock and enter the password to make changes. Now, from Allows apps to be downloaded from, select any where.
The application will install. Open and connect your Android device to your Mac using a USB cable.
On your Android phone, download and launch Helium. The app will tell you you need to enable USB debugging. It will take you directly to Developer Options but if not, go to Setting -> About phone and press build number seven times to enable Developer options.
Then go to Setting -> Developer Options and activate search and detect errors via USB.
Return to the app and it will ask you to authenticate the connection between your phone and Mac. In a few seconds, the Mac app will say “Carbon is enabled on your device”.
That’s it, Android apps can now back up apps. You can disconnect the USB cable now. But if you restart your phone, you’ll need to go through the process again.
How to backup and restore app data using Helium
In the Helium app, go to Support tab and scroll to the apps you want to back up. Check them out and click Support and select a destination. You can send it to internal storage, SD card or cloud storage. Just like that application data will be backed up.
It’s important to note here that Helium doesn’t back up apps by itself, but only app data. So if you are recovering data on a new phone or after a reset, you need to download the app first.
Fortunately, Helium makes this very obvious (but only when restoring, not when backing up). So tapping the app will take you to the Play Store where you can download it and then recover your data.
My experience with the app
I’ve tried backing up and restoring apps on my dad’s unrooted phone and all is working fine. I backed up the apps, deleted them, went to the Play Store, downloaded it, opened the pristine app, made some changes and moved to Helium. Helium then restored the app data and made sure I was back in the right place when backing up the data.
And while Helium requires you to connect to your desktop to do some code tricks, it’s better than other apps, in that your backups are in the phone itself, which helps the process. recovery is much easier.
