How to Enable Dark Mode in OneDrive for iOS (and Other Tips)

It’s been a long time since I gave you a reason why you should start using OneDrive on iOS. I’m happy to say that Microsoft’s cloud storage service has gotten better these days. And one of the biggest additions to OneDrive is the official dark mode addition.

But how do you enable it? If you’re looking around the app looking for that toggle, or the toggle to enable dark mode, you won’t find any. There’s a reason why.

OneDrive Dark Mode integrates with the native dark mode functionality found in iOS 13. So you must enable it at the system level to enjoy dark mode in OneDrive.

Let’s see how you can do that, then take a look at a few other additions and changes in OneDrive.

Turn on Dark Mode

To use OneDrive in dark mode, you must enable dark mode in iOS 13. If you’re using iOS 12 or later, you must upgrade to iOS 13. If you’re new to enabling dark mode on iOS 13, then here’s how to do it.

Note:

Open Control Center by swiping down from the upper-right corner of the screen. Follow up by pressing and holding the Brightness bar. Next, tap the Dark Mode icon to activate it.

Go back to OneDrive and you’ll see the app show up in dark mode right away. And doesn’t it look great?

Microsoft has rolled out dark mode into every corner of OneDrive. Files, folders, filenames, and menus are clearly displayed against a dark background, and image thumbnails show up clearly without problems.

I can also see a large number of perfect black pixels everywhere. That makes a lot of sense for iPhones with OLED panels (iPhone XS, XS Pro, etc.), where you can expect improved battery life when using OneDrive.

Since OneDrive follows the iOS 13 dark mode functionality, you may experience situations where dark mode may turn off automatically. That happens when there is a dark mode appearance calendar set up on your device. To turn the feature off, go to the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad, tap Display & Brightness, then turn off the switch next to Auto.

Scan documents

Did you know that OneDrive has its own built-in Office Lens scanner? If you’ve only recently started using OneDrive, you may not be aware of the truth. That’s because Microsoft changed the traditional Office Lens shutter icon to resemble the camera icon. But it still carries the same function.

As soon as you tap the camera icon at the bottom of the screen, you can easily start scanning documents, business cards, book covers, etc. The Office Lens algorithm will then work its magic and crop and adjust the scanned item accordingly. You also get access to a set of markup and annotation tools that you can use before saving the document to OneDrive.

If you plan to use the Files app in iOS to access OneDrive, you can also use iOS 13’s native document scanning functionality to scan and save documents to OneDrive.

Personal Vault

OneDrive can be secured with a password, Touch ID, or Face ID, adding a nice layer of protection to your files. However, certain documents require extra security, so leaving them with other files or rolling the camera won’t affect the document. And that’s where Personal Vault comes in.

Look around the OneDrive root folder and you’ll see an icon that looks like a safe or vault. Tap it and you can set up Personal Vault in no time. That involves adding a separate PIN, but you can also choose to implement Touch ID or Face ID on top of that for seamless Personal Vault access.

You can then use Personal Vault to secure sensitive documents like passport photos/scans, driver’s licenses, birth certificates, etc. You can upload documents manually or use the Scan option next to the ‘Suggested files’ list to scan them using the built-in Office Lens functionality.

Personal Vault is configured to automatically lock after a few minutes. If you regularly leave your iPhone or iPad with OneDrive open (and unlocked), Personal Vault should still protect your sensitive documents from unauthorized access.

Upload photos in JPG format

The HEIC image format has become standard on the iPhone, and for a good reason. It requires less space and contains more visual data than the older JPG format. But there are compatibility issues, and on platforms like Windows and Android you often have to convert HEIC images to JPG to view them.

OneDrive negates potential compatibility issues by providing a means to automatically convert your images to JPG. That applies when manually uploading photos or while using the Automatic Camera Upload feature in OneDrive.

To convert images from HEIC to JPG when manually uploading photos, go to the OneDrive Settings panel, tap Manual Photo Upload, then tap JPG.

Enable Dark Mode One Drive Ios 10

To start converting from HEIC to JPG while using Automatic Camera Upload, go to the OneDrive Settings panel. Then tap Camera Upload, then Camera Upload Format, then JPG.

While it’s possible to convert photos from HEIC to JPG, OneDrive’s Camera Upload feature only has 5GB of free storage (similar to iCloud’s free 5GB) unless you upgrade. However, the ability to convert manually uploaded photos to JPG is something that you should explore.

Driving in the dark

Dark mode is all the rage, and it’s great to see OneDrive finally supporting it on iPhone and iPad. However, I wish it wasn’t tied to iOS 13’s dark mode. OneDrive is an app that I don’t mind using all the time in dark mode, and I don’t want my iOS dark mode scheduler spoil that. At least Microsoft added a separate switch to enable dark mode in Outlook, so there’s still hope. But considering how great OneDrive’s dark mode looks on iOS, I can’t complain.
