How to Use SoundCloud Groups to Promote Your Music

SoundCloud is a great platform for sharing music and audio files. However, many people make the mistake of not taking advantage of the tools SoundCloud provides to promote your music and build an audience. Like publishing your own website without telling anyone, posting a song to SoundCloud won’t automatically get you thousands of hits.

One such way that SoundCloud users can promote their music is through SoundCloud Teams. This is one of the lesser known features of SoundCloud, but Groups allows anyone to send their music to an audience with similar tastes and interests.

It enhances your own visibility and at the same time allows you to discover new uploads from the community. You can even create your own groups.

Join and submit to a SoundCloud group

Important: First familiarize yourself with the existing SoundCloud groups and which ones you’d be comfortable joining. For example, if you’re posting a cover of Adele, you can search SoundCloud for a group called “Adele cover” and record the number of members. The more current members, the more people your music can reach after you submit it.

When you find a group you want to join on SoundCloud’s website, click on the group’s name to go to the page.

At the top, click where it says Choose a track from your profile and select the file you uploaded that you want to add to the group.

Note: Some groups require moderators to approve new posts. In this case, your file will be submitted for approval before being publicly available to team members. If not, it will post immediately.

Once you’ve posted your audio file to the group, you can consider commenting and liking some of the other posts, so hopefully those people will return the favor.

You can also add songs to a group by going to your own SoundCloud profile, scrolling to the file, and clicking Add to group under. But this only works for groups that you are already a member of.

Create your own SoundCloud group

The downside of creating your own SoundCloud group is having to start from scratch. You won’t have an existing audience, so it won’t do much to promote your music right away. However, if you manage to get members over time, your music can gradually gain popularity.

Access your profile on SoundCloud. Just like above, scroll to the song you want to add to a new group and click Add to group below file.

In the dialog window, press Create a new group.

On the new page, you are asked to enter the group name. Optionally, you can add a short description to let others know the group’s views, a longer description with more details, or group rules and group images.

If you want to automatically approve new posts from others, tick the corresponding checkbox. Finally, big click Save group to create your SoundCloud group.

Your song is automatically added to the group when it goes live on SoundCloud.

Tip: You can add files to more than one group, so for good measure, please add your music to perhaps your own as well as other already popular groups.
