Fix Out of Sync Audio in Videos in Windows, Mac & Linux

Sometimes, while encoding your video from RAW format, there may be some cases where the audio doesn’t sync with the video. If you are a video editor, it is easy to fix errors. Just use different settings in the encoder and render the video again. However, if someone sent you a video or you downloaded it from the internet, things get a little tricky.

Out of sync sound can be one of the most annoying things when watching movies, music, and other interesting videos. And if you’re facing a similar situation, today I’m going to talk about two simple ways you can quickly fix out of sync audio/video problems without breaking a sweat.

Temporary fix with VLC Player

If you are looking for a way to fix the problem of audio/video out of sync only when watching videos on your computer, you can do this with many 3rd party media players like VLC, Pot Player or even even KM Player. Using these media players, you can manually adjust the audio sync while watching videos; however, changes will be made by the player itself and no changes will be made to the original media file. This means that the next time you play the same video, you will have to adjust the sound again. So, weighing in on popularity, we’ll see how to change audio sync on VLC Player.

After you have loaded the video on VLC player and it starts playing, press the . button ‘J’ or ‘K’ keys to increase or decrease the audio delay. A single tap on any of those buttons changes the sound for 50 milliseconds. So if the distance is large, you will have to press the buttons many times unless you are in audio-video sync. While ‘J‘ key will make VLC play the audio track slightly before the video, the ‘ keyKY‘ key will do exactly the opposite.

If you want to use Pot or KM Player for similar features, you can right click on the player while watching a video and make edits using Sound Settings as shown in the screenshot. Please note, however, that audio changes will be limited to specific players on specific computers. If you’re going to share this file with someone, upload it to YouTube, or you’re just going to watch it on a TV or any other player, you’ll have to write the changes to the original file.

Permanent fix with Avidemux

We will be using Avidemux for the task, which is a free, open source, cross-platform video editor for Microsoft Windows, Linux, Mac OS X. Using the app, you can edit videos and convert them. video from one format to another. However, we will only focus on how you can fix out of sync audio/video problems.

After you’ve installed Avidemux and launched it, import the video into it. Having done that, you will see the option Copy in Video and Audio Output. If you want to change the output format, you can click the drop-down menu and select the desired format, but if you want to proceed without risk, just keep the setting as Copy.

Finally, to change the audio delay, check Change in Audio Output and enter the value in milliseconds (1000 milliseconds = 1 second). Enter a negative value if the audio appears before the video. The best way to get this value is to use the VLC fix above.

When everything is ready, select the final output format and then select the option Rescue from the File Menu. It may take some time for the app to render the final video, then the video can be played on any player without audio sync issues.
