How to Switch the Default Browser in Windows 10

Let’s face it, you are a power user. You’ve upgraded to Windows 10, probably from Windows 7 because it’s finally starting to respect the proficient users. The type of people who use Windows to get things done, not just browse Twitter with the touchscreen on their laptop. And in the same spirit, Microsoft has integrated its own new Edge browser. Not bad. It is much better than Internet Explorer. But make no mistake that it is intended for proficient users. It has no extensions, sometimes there are rendering problems, it crashes, there are errors.

Edge to title Chrome

Of course, switching to another browser should be easy, right? Not exactly exactly. This time, Windows has made switching default apps a little more difficult. User is taken to Setting app where they need to manually select the alternate app they want to set as the default app. And that’s not just limited to browsers. Mozilla has spoken out about this change. Hopefully, Microsoft will change this with a future update. Until then, here’s how it’s done.

How to switch to Google Chrome from Edge

When you launch Google Chrome for the first time, it will ask you if you want to make it your default browser. But not in my case.

Step 1: To start the process, click the . button burger menu icon in the top right and select Setting.

Step 5: Click on it and select Google Chrome.

That’s it, Chrome is now your default browser.

Pro tip: Cortana in text mode is awesome. It’s the search feature we’ve always deserved in Windows. You can simply type anything and the relevant stuff will just show up. Searching documents and folders has never been easier. The best part for me was hitting the keyboard shortcut for Cortana (Win+S), typing in the domain name (guidingtech.com), hitting enter and that’s the website, loaded in my default browser (Chrome). And this is the great part. It also works for web search. So you can just type anything in the Cortana field, make sure Search on Internet selected, press enter and it will open in Google Search in Chrome. Is that not something?

How to Switch to Firefox from Edge

In Firefox you can click Using Firefox as my default browser option from the popup when you open it for the first time or click burger menu -> Option -> then select Default.

This will bring the same Setting screen we saw above. Only this time from the default list will you have to choose firefox.

Alternative route: Use the Settings app

You can do this directly as well. Go to Cortana’s text field, type Settingpress enter and in the app select System -> Default Applications.

What is your favorite Windows 10 feature so far?

If you’ve been using Windows 10 for a while, you probably have a favorite feature by now. For me, it’s Cortana. Share yours in our forum section below.
