No one likes intrusive guests; be it in real life or the online world. While the Google Assistant is a great product, it can be frustrating when it’s not working properly. The random appearance of the Google Assistant can destroy anyone’s smartphone experience.
Normally, the Assistant launches when you press the home button or say the command “Ok Google” or “Ok Google”. But unfortunately, sometimes the Assistant still turns on itself while doing something or when you say “Ok Google” to your Google Home.
That horror is coming to an end. Here you will find seven ways to prevent the Assistant from opening on its own. Let’s check them out.
1. Disable Google Assistant
Here are the steps:
Step 1: Launch the Google app on your phone and tap on the More tab at the bottom.
Step 2: Tap Settings, then Google Assistant.
Step 3: Click the Assistant tab. Scroll down and tap the Phone option.
Step 4: Turn off the switch for Google Assistant.
You can also use other methods to launch Google Assistant settings and finally disable Google Assistant.
Even if you have the Assistant turned off, the Assistant will sometimes ask you to turn it on. In some cases, you’ll get a message that says “Your Google Assistant is ready to help you get things done.” To prevent this annoying action, check other solutions.
2. Turn off Voice Access
Disabling Assistant does not block Assistant voice commands (if enabled). That is, if you say “Ok Google” even if the Assistant is turned off, your phone will activate and ask you to turn on the Assistant. That’s especially troubling for Google Home or Mini users. When they want to interact with Google Home, the Assistant on their phone will also activate.
To prevent that mischievous behavior, you need to disable the Access by Voice Match setting. For that, follow these steps:
Step 1: Open Settings on your phone and go to Apps/Apps and notifications/Installed apps depending on the option available on your phone.
Step 2: Tap Default Apps. This option may be available in the Advanced section on some phones.
On Mi phones, you’ll have to tap on the three-dot icon in the upper-right corner, then select the Default apps option.
Alternatively, use the search feature in the settings to find the Default Apps setting.
Step 3: In Default Apps, tap Assistant & voice input.
Some smartphones, especially Samsung’s, refer to this setting as the Device Support app. Touch it.
Step 4: On the next screen, tap the gear icon next to the Assistant app option.
Step 5: You will be taken to the Google Assistant Voice settings. Here, tap on Voice Match.
Step 6: Turn off the switch for Access by Voice Match. Then restart your phone. Hopefully, the bad boy won’t bother you anymore.
3. Disable Google Assistant on Home Button
Sometimes, accidentally tapping the home button on Android launches Assistant. If you want to prevent that from happening, you can turn it off.
To do so, follow these steps:
Step 1: Repeat steps 1-3 of the ‘Disable Voice Access’ solution mentioned above, i.e. go to Settings > Apps > Default apps > Assistant & voice input.
Step 2: Now instead of tapping the gear icon, tap the Assistant app. Then select None when asked to select a support application.
After you do that, holding down the home button won’t launch the Assistant or ask you to turn on the Assistant if it’s disabled. If you face any issues while disabling this feature, follow this detailed guide.
4. Clear cache for Google Apps
Clearing the cache of Google apps is another way to fix the problem. Here are the steps for the same.
Step 1: Open Settings on your phone and go to Apps/Apps & notifications/Installed apps — depending on which option is visible on your phone.
Step 2: Tap Google. You will be taken to the Application Information screen. Here, tap on Archive.
Step 3: Tap Clear cache. Clearing cache is different from clearing memory/data as it will not delete any data from the app. Restart your phone and the ghost of the Google Assistant should be gone.
5. Revoke microphone permission for Google app
To do so, go to the App Info screen of the Google app as mentioned in the previous fix, i.e. Settings > Installed apps > Google. Tap Permissions and turn off the switch for Microphone.
Before we move on to the final fix, check out these solutions if your problem is only with the headphones.
6. Google Assistant continues to activate with headphones
If Google Assistant only pops up when you plug in your headset or you press any button on the headset, follow these steps to fix it.
Clear headphone jack
To get started, remove the headphone jack (the top of your headphones) with a clean cloth. Also, try removing the headphone port on your phone by blowing air into it.
Change headset settings in Assistant
For that, first follow steps 1-4 of Turn off the Voice Access method provided above i.e. Settings > Apps > Default apps > Assistant & input using voice > gear icon next to the Assistant app. Turn off the switch next to “Allow wired headset requests when device is locked”.
Tip:
Use another headset
If the problem persists and the music keeps stopping while making room for the Assistant, try using a different headset.
7. Disable Google Apps
Finally, if nothing works, disable the Google app on your phone. In case you are wondering why not uninstall it? Well, since it’s a pre-installed app, you can’t uninstall it.
Give it another chance
Sure, anyone doesn’t like the random appearance of Google Assistant, but it’s not a bad product. The assistant not only helps you take notes and create lists among other things, but it’s also pretty funny. I hope after the Assistant issues are resolved, you can start to explore more about it.
