How to add and sync AirTag with your iPhone
Once you take the AirTag out of the package, the first thing you should do is add it to your iPhone and pair them.
Step 1: Unlock your iPhone and enable connections like Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Once done, return to the main screen.
Step 2: Meanwhile, remove the battery tab (transparent thin sheet) from your AirTag. This step will complete the battery circuit and power the tracker.
Step 3: Hold it near your iPhone and you should see a Connect card on your phone. Once done, you can give the tracker a name. Currently, Apple lets you choose from Backpacks, Bikes, Cameras, etc.
Step 4: Complete the rest of the sign-up process to add the tracker to your Apple AirTag account. Once done, open the Find My app and the AirTag will be displayed in the Items tab. Simple, see.
Play a sound and find it
To explore all the things you can do with this Apple tracker, tap on the tracker name as shown below. A single tap on Play Sound will trigger a pitch sound, while a single tap on Find will tell you where the AirTag is.
If you want to test its full power, you can leave it in a far corner of your house, then tap Find to find your phone tracker.
If you’re sure the tracker is nearby, you can also ask Siri to locate it for you. You can simply say, “Hey Siri, locate my tracker.” If it is nearby, it will locate it and ping it. Cool, right?
Change the name of the AirTag
The good thing about Apple AirTag is that you can assign different names to it. If you want to change its name, that can be done without any hassle. To make the name more interesting, you can also add emojis. Here’s how you can do it.
Step 1: To change your Apple AirTag’s name, go to Items on the Find My app and tap the tracker’s name.
Step 2: Scroll down the card until you see the Rename item option. Tap on it and choose a new name.
If you are not satisfied with the presets, you can also add a custom name. For this, scroll down the list of names and tap Customize.
This is where it gets interesting. Instead of a regular name, you just need to add an emoji. Great, we want to say.
How to turn off item safety warnings
You may already know that AirTag has anti-tracking measures built in. In the unfortunate event that your iPhone detects an unknown tracking device moving with you, it will alert you.
However, if you share the tracker with your friends and family, you should disable the feature to avoid unnecessary alerts and notifications.
Step 1: Go to the Me section of the Find My app and toggle the switch for Item Safety Alerts.
Please note that even with Safety Alerts off, you can still see the tracker’s location. It’s just that you won’t get notifications.
The best scenario is to unpair it with the current iPhone and link it to the new owner’s phone if you lend it out for long periods of time.
What happens if you lose your AirTag
If you lose your AirTag, you can put it in Lost Mode. Once Lost Mode is activated, it will notify you if it is within range of your phone.
Step 1: To enable Lost mode, go to tracker settings (via Item) and tap Lost > Enable. At this point, you’ll be prompted to update your contact details so the finder can contact you.
Step 2: Once found, you can safely turn off Lost mode.
What happens if you find a lost AirTag
As we mentioned earlier, AirTags has built-in anti-stalking measures. One of the coolest things is that the tracker will make a sound if it doesn’t detect its owner for a long period of time. If you happen to find someone else’s AirTag while on an evening walk (or rock climbing), you can easily find the owner’s information.
Step 1: If the owner has set Lost Mode, you can touch and hold your smartphone to the white side of the tracker. You should see a notification pop up on your phone (both Android and iPhone).
Step 2: Tap to open the notification and you will see the owner’s information on it.
Remember that NFC should be enabled.
How to reset the AirTag and re-pair it with your other iPhone
Apple Airtag can also be paired with other iPhones. The re-pairing process is simple and quick, and the job is completed in minutes. Although we do want the reset mechanism to be a bit different.
Step 1: Rotate the back of the tracker until the metal back comes off. Now, remove the battery.
Step 2: Reinsert the battery, then press the battery down until you hear a small beep.
Please note that the output is not loud and you may want to keep the tracker closer to your ear.
Step 3: Repeat the above process four more times. The fifth sound sounds slightly different from the previous one to indicate that the tracker is in pairing mode.
Step 4: Meanwhile, unlink the AirTag from the older phone it was paired with.
Step 5: On your new iPhone, enable all necessary connections like Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Now hold the AirTag near your phone (your phone must be unlocked) and the connection tag will show up on your phone screen.
And then you can start using AirTag again.
No more lost items
Now that you know what your AirTag can do, how do you plan to use it? Are you going to hook it up to your car keys (like I did), or leave it in your wallet?
