Not all of us have had the experience where you sit down to show your friends pictures of your recent vacation and as soon as you click on the folder the thumbnails take a long time to load. download on your Windows PC. That can become quite an annoyance, especially if you have to quickly find a few important photos.
That problem is more severe in systems that contain a lot of media files inside folders. Under normal circumstances, Windows 10 keeps a cache of thumbnail files for your files and folders. So when you open a folder, the contents are ready for you to view.
Over time, this buffer gradually starts to fill up as new files are added to the system. And that’s one of the reasons why Windows File Explorer takes its own time to display thumbnails. Or, in the worst case, your system shows incorrect previews of the files.
Thankfully, the changes are not permanent and with the right solution, one can fix this problem quickly. In this post, we will explore four different ways to speed up thumbnail loading time in Windows 10.
If you’re lucky, you only need to do one of the fixes to fix the problem, while in the others you may need to try all three.
1. Adopt group policy
Step 1: Open Group Policy by typing Edit Group Policy (or gpedit.msc) in the Start menu. As you may already know, Windows Group Policy has a set of advanced local settings that you can tweak, as long as you know how to use them.
Step 2: Once inside, navigate to User Configuration > Windows Components > File Explorer.
Step 3: Now, look for the option ‘Turn off the caching of thumbnails…’. Most likely this option will be in Unconfigured or disabled state.
All you have to do is select Enabled and hit the Apply button.
Once you have applied the above, restart your computer for the above changes to take effect.
2. Via Control Panel Settings
Next, we have to make sure that your system is set to show all the file and folder thumbnails. To do so, follow the steps below.
Step 1: Open your system’s Control Panel and go to System and Security > System and click on Advanced system settings.
Step 2: Select the Advanced tab and select Settings under Performance.
Here you just need to make sure that the ‘Show thumbnails instead of icons’ option is enabled. Otherwise, check the box and press OK.
3. Check registry value
Last but not least, you may want to edit the Registry values. Obviously your system has a lot of maintenance tools running automatically. And as you may have suspected, one of its jobs is to regularly clean the File Explorer cache.
Just like your browser and phone, clearing the cache will make new space, which is good from a storage point of view. But at the same time, File Explorer also has to reload the cache, which is time consuming.
Therefore, if you are really frustrated with slow load times, you may want to adjust the values slightly so that Disk Cleanup is not enabled for thumbnail caching. Normally, the Disk Cleanup job (named SilentCleanup) chooses the autorun job with the values 1. Naturally, if you change it to 0, the job will ignore these keys.
To do so, open Registry Editor by typing Regedit on the start menu.
Note: The Windows Registry contains all the settings and configurations used by your Windows system. Therefore, it is important that you make appropriate backups of the registry values
Next, navigate your way to the following path,
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches
Here you will see two values, Default and Autorun. All you have to do is set Autorun’s DWORD value to 0.
Do the same for the following path,
HKLM\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches\Thumbnail Cache
Once done, restart your PC for the changes to take effect.
4. Resize Thumbnail Cache
You may also want to increase the buffer size if you are in the habit of keeping all your photos and images in one folder. And as you might have guessed, the way to do it is via registry values.
Open Registry and navigate to below path,
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explore
Once done, right-click an empty space and select New. Next, select New > String Value and add the term, Maximum Cached Symbol.
Now add the value 4096 and press the OK button. This tweak will create a 4MB cache file.
If you want a slightly larger cache file, you can also update this update value to 8192. By default, the icon cache size in Windows is about 500KB.
