How to Get New Gmail 5.0 Material Design on Android Kitkat

One of the things I love about iOS is its updates. Unlike Android, when Apple has one, it will be on all their latest devices. For Android users who aren’t so lucky, it could take months. Most of the time, they have to live with older versions. But the good thing is, unlike iOS users, users cannot stop Android users. We have seen how you can get many of your Material Design apps for Android on KitKat without rooting your device.

Today, I will show you how to download and install Gmail 5.0 on Android, which is already in the latest version on Android i.e. Android Lollipop.

The APK has been leaked before, but the previous version had a signature mismatch that caused users to uninstall the older Gmail version before they could install the latest version. However, this leaked newer version is duly signed. This means you can simply install it as a regular update on your existing Gmail app and enjoy the latest release.

Gmail 5.0: Downloads and What’s New

Gmail 5.0 comes with refreshed Material Design and Exchange account support, allowing to configure other non-Google email accounts (e.g. Yahoo and Outlook). You can download and install the APK file using this link, however, make sure that you have enabled external APK installation from the Android security menu.

After you install and launch the app, it will automatically detect all the Google accounts that you have configured on your device. Also, it will give you the option to add another email address. All you need to do is enter your email address and password and the app will configure everything for you. If you need to manually configure the server settings, there is an option for that too.

After all the initial configuration, the app will load all your default Google accounts. The app has nice animations – you can visually see your emails disappear while navigating and composing emails. The plus button at the bottom right opens the compose window. The editor window is typical and there is not much to explain here. Like any other Material Design app, you have large icons and you can select and perform batch actions.

Swiping on the left edge opens the left sidebar. Here you can choose different folders for the existing email account, or switch between additional accounts you may have configured. To switch between accounts, select the account icon or simply swipe between them. Everything is amazingly smooth. In the settings, you have General Settings for the entire application along with individual account settings.

One thing missing from the app is the ability to change the color layout. You are stuck with the default peach theme, it is currently not possible to change it from the settings.

In the account settings, you can set different signatures for each account. So if you have two accounts, one for business and the other for personal, you can configure them accordingly.

Conclusion

That’s pretty much everything about the new Gmail 5.0 for Android. Personally, I like the ability to configure non-Gmail accounts. Now I no longer need third-party apps to manage my Outlook and Exchange accounts. But don’t confuse it with Google Inbox. For this, no invitation is needed, so go ahead and download the app to get started.
