How to Set Up and Get Started With Mi Band on Android

Xiaomi’s Mi Band makes for a pretty good passive activity and sleep tracking. At Rs 999 (about $20 on Amazon), it’s pretty cheap, almost an impulsive purchase. Just wear it on your wrist all day and it will track your steps and calories burned (while walking and running) and at night it will give you detailed sleep report your (doesn’t work for mid-day naps).

Mi Band has no screen. It’s just a tracking device. So you will need an Android smartphone or an iPhone running the Mi Fit app (Android, iPhone) to view stats and to connect and manage the Mi Band.

Let’s see how you can quickly start using Mi Band after unboxing.

How to attach a Tracker to a band

When you open the box, you’ll find the tracker and the strap separate. The band is made of rubber and is flexible. On the other hand, the tracker is made from aluminum alloy.

So take them both out of the box and gently slide the tracker in the Mi Band. Try to bend and stretch the strip if it’s hard to push in.

The box comes with a small USB docking station. Peel the tracker from the strap, plug the end with the gold charging points into the holder, and attach the USB end of the cable to your PC or a regular charger. It will take a few hours to charge. Mine died out of the box and took all night to fully charge. The great thing is that you will only need to do this once a month.

How to properly set up Mi Band

To set up Mi Band on your Android phone, you need to download the Mi Fit app. And you will need to sign up for a Mi Account. The app will then ask you to enter details such as your gender, height and weight.

Now, follow the procedure to connect to Mi Band. It will tell you to make sure the Mi Band is charged and keep it close to your phone. Oh and you’ll need to have Bluetooth enabled for this to work.

I did all that and it still doesn’t work for me.

So I went to Setting -> Bluetooth and type in my bracelet to manually connect to it.

Then I go back to the Mi Fit app and that’s it! It recognizes Mi Band immediately.

Use Mi Band to disable Phone Lock in Android

If you’re using Lollipop, you can turn off any type of screen lock while wearing the Mi Band or while the ring is within Bluetooth’s reach.

To get started, tap the three-dot menu button in the Mi Fit app and select Setting. Here, press Unlock device by band and click Begin.

Once the app re-pairs with the band, you’ll be taken to Protect settings screen from where you can enable pattern lock and Smart lock. But for me, these settings are in Setting -> Lock screen (this depends on the type of Android phone you have).

Now, whenever your Mi Band is connected, the lock screen authentication will disappear. You can force activate it by clicking Lock up icon in the lock screen.

There is much more Mi Band can do

Mi Band has 3 small LEDs on it. But it’s amazing what you can do with it. We will take a detailed look at how to customize the Mi Band in a later article.

Until then, let us know how the Mi Band is doing. For me, I found the step tracking feature to be quite accurate. The most beneficial use case for it is sleep tracking. Though I need to get used to sleeping with a bracelet around my wrist.
