How to Send Mail Merge Like Mass Emails Using Gmail

Services like MailChimp make sending newsletters really easy. They take care of everything and they have great samples. But they may not be for you. First of all, there are all MailChimp brands. And the emails end up in the “Promotions” tab in Gmail. Also, if you just want to send 100 or so emails every now and then (not periodically), MailChimp can cause too much trouble.

If you just want to use Gmail for bulk email, mail merge style, then GMass is for you.

What is GMass?

GMass is a Chrome extension and is currently free to use. All it does is let you create very basic mail merge emails right in Gmail. Customization is currently limited to first and last names, but hopefully we’ll see more attributes soon. GMass makes emails look like they were created specifically for each recipient.

Limitations with GMass: Because GMass essentially sends individual emails using Gmail, it is limited by Gmail guidelines that say you can only send 500 emails/day on personal accounts and 2000 emails/day on your Google Apps account.

How to use GMass

To get started, first download the Chrome extension and visit the Gmail website. Click Compose, compile button. If you see the GMass icon in the button, it means the extension is installed and ready to go.

The first time you open Gmail after installing GMass, you will be prompted to activate GMass. Just select your existing Gmail account and you’re good to go.

Before you start, you need to add any email addresses that you want to send emails to, to your contacts. Make sure you add first and last name. This is what GMass will use to customize the email. If you don’t do this, the title will essentially be blank.

Once you’ve prepared your contacts, just start putting them in ARRIVE This part follows the other.

Now we start to actually create the email. Write the email you want. But keep places for first name And Surname drum. Instead, type in {First name} And {Surname}. This will automatically enter the first and last name of the person you are sending the personal email to.

Option GMass

Now you just need to click on the GMass button and it will start generating individual emails based on the parameters and will start sending them. But there are a few options you should be aware of.

Click the small up arrow button. Here, you’ll see options to schedule emails later, save them as drafts instead of sending them, and enable/disable tracking.

A really cool option here is to send the email as a reply instead of a new message. If you’ve already chatted with the recipient, the email will be sent as a reply. This means it will show up in a string and look like it was made specifically (when it really isn’t).

What will you use it for?

I can see small businesses getting a lot out of GMass. What will you use it for? Share with us in the comments below.
