How to Schedule Instagram Posts on iPhone and Android

If you’re a social media manager, there are tools like Buffer and Hootsuite that make your life easier. You can schedule posts for a week in advance and they will appear on Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and even LinkedIn without any problems. One name that is always absent from this list is Instagram.

Out of all the social networks above, Instagram is the only one that is still considered “interesting”. Naturally, marketers want to use Instagram to reach a larger audience, but Instagram doesn’t seem to care much about that. The reason it’s not supported by things like Cache is because it doesn’t have an extended API. This means that third-party apps cannot connect to your Instagram account and post any content on your behalf.

So, without automatic posting for Instagram, how exactly can you schedule it? By using 1 cup of automation with a teaspoon of old-fashioned manual labor.

Schedule Instagram posts with TakeOff

Currently, TakeOff (iPhone, Android) is one of the few apps that allows you to schedule posts for Instagram.

Here is how it works. You select a photo or video, crop the photo or video into an Instagram-friendly square, write a caption, then choose a time.

Then, at the specified time, you’ll get a notification that your post is now ready.

You will be taken to Instagram where you can add filters, edit captions and then share the image/video.

For you the social media manager who has to post 10 times a week to Instagram on a schedule or randomly, TakeOff can solve most of your problems.

You can sit down and create your 10 posts at once however you like, complete with captions and hashtags (but not filters). Once you get the notification, all you have to do is tap a few buttons to post the update. To me, that sounds better than taking the time to write a separate post 10 times in a week.

TakeOff is also a bit clever. It will look at your profile history and suggest the best time to post. You can also specify how many posts you want to make in a day.

Talking about the app itself

TakeOff is an app by the people at Crowdfire. Crowdfire is an app to increase your social engagement. There are similar elements here as well.

For example, you cannot start using the application. You need to wait for an invitation. This appears in a few minutes via a notification. This is pretty silly – there’s no reason for this to exist other than a false sense of the importance of TakeOff.

Then, TakeOff asks you to create an account “for security reasons”. But come on guys, if you want to grow your email list you can ask too.

TakeOff assumes that if you’re using the app, you’ll be able to get as many likes as you like, either way. And it automatically embeds hashtags (sort of spam) to get likes, which you need to disable. For those who are serious about using TakeOff to manage their accounts, this can be a big turning point.

Finally, TakeOff supports multiple accounts, but it’s unclear how. Because in the end you’re posting from the Instagram app that doesn’t support multiple accounts. It’s a paid feature (I couldn’t test it), and both the iPhone and Android apps show me different plans. On iOS, plans start at $9.99 a year for 2 accounts, and on Android it’s just a $30, 5 account plan.

Also, a free trial for the premium plan doesn’t exist.

While the final posting process is manual, the simple act of prepping a bunch of Instagram posts with TakeOff will make your life so much easier.
