Downgrade Samsung Devices from Lollipop to 4.4 KitKat

Change is the only constant, but we find it hard to accept. Wouldn’t you agree? Here is an example of ‘techie’: Windows XP. Definitely the longest running operating system in history (or Microsoft’s history). Vista was a disaster but Windows 7 was not. However, people don’t want to leave their XP comfort zone. Windows XP continues to thrive (and still is in many parts of the world).

When you spend a significant amount of time on a particular version of software, it can be difficult to accept a major upgrade. And while downgrading the Windows operating system is an easy piece of cake, Android likes to give users a hard time.

We have already seen how you can downgrade a Moto G 2014 device. Today I will show you how to downgrade most Samsung devices that have updated Lollipop back to KitKat 4.4. The thing to note here is, we will flash the official firmware and no device will void the warranty. Root is also not required.

Downloading firmware

To get started, back up all the data on your device. Your droid will become a clean media once it is flashed and the system files will be deleted. However, the contents of the SD card, both internal and external, will remain the same. Also, make sure that you have charged the device to at least 80%. Once that’s done, open the SamMobile homepage and create an account with them.

firmwareFirmware Search

SamMobile stores all official firmware for Samsung devices and you can search for a specific phone by navigating to the firmware section. Assuming you are looking for Galaxy S4, it would be better if you provide the exact model number like i9000 or i9505. Now download the KitKat version zip file to your computer. Please make sure you select the correct country while downloading.

Select Firmware

Note: The free download option at SamMobile limits the download speed and there is no way you can resume a failed download. A paid upgrade to a pro account removes the limit. But you can always use Google to find a copy of the file in Mega or Media Fire.

Download the firmware

Once you have the firmware, extract the ZIP file and store it in a folder on your computer. Alternatively, download Odin version 3.04. The reason I chose this version is because I find it the most stable. But you are free to make your own decisions. If you do not have the Samsung Drivers installed on your computer, please download and install them before moving on to the next step.

Firmware flashing

Depending on the ROM, you may get only one Tar.gz file or multiple files. If it’s just one file, load everything in the Odin PDA section. If there are multiple files, upload them to the respective section. A brief description will be given on the SamMobile download page and you can refer to that page to see if the PIT file should be included.

Odin

Now put your Samsung phone in download mode. Volume Down + Home + Power Button should be pressed unless you see the download screen. There, press the volume button to continue.

Once in download mode, plug in Samsung and wait for it to be detected. Finally, click on the Start button. Guaranteed only Auto Restart And F. Reset time highlighted in the Odin window.

Install the firmware

The flashing process will take some time, and once it’s done, the droid will revert to its KitKat factory state and you’ll have to do all the initial configuration. Use the backup you created to restore settings quickly.

Conclusion

So that’s how you can downgrade most Samsung mobiles. The above method, tested on Samsung Galaxy S4 and S5, works perfectly. Thanks to Odin, flashing a Samsung phone is a walk in the park when compared to other devices. However, if you have any doubts, feel free to ask them in the comments section.
