There may be times when you want to view a web page in desktop mode on your iPhone or iPad. Maybe you want to see how the website looks or you need to check a specific detail that is only available in desktop mode. If you’re using Safari as the default browser on your iPhone or iPad, it’s pretty easy to claim a desktop site on it.
1. Request a Safari Desktop Site on iPhone
The default request desktop site option can be accessed through the extensions menu on Safari on iPhone. Please use it.
Step 1: Launch Safari browser and visit a website.
Step 2: When you load the website, look for the extension icon in the Safari address bar. Touch it.
Step 3: Select Request Desktop Site and Safari will reload the web page in desktop mode.
You can go back to the same extension menu and request the mobile site to browse on your iPhone. If you just want to open all future tabs in desktop mode, you need to make a tweak in the Safari settings menu.
Step 1: Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
Step 2: Scroll to Safari.
Step 3: Find the Settings for websites menu and select Request Desktop Website.
Step 4: Enable the switch for all sites from the following menu.
From now on, any web queries will load in desktop mode in Safari for iPhone. Please note that the entire experience in desktop mode may be below average on a small screen.
Most websites these days are optimized for mobile use. You should only request a desktop site when required. We recommend that you don’t use desktop mode all the time in Safari for iPhone.
2. Use Desktop Sites on iPad
While we don’t recommend using desktop mode in Safari for iPhone, we oppose the same on the Safari iPad app. Most iPad users use the device in landscape mode, and with the iPad screen size approaching 13 inches, it makes sense to just use the Safari browser in desktop mode.
That’s why Apple has made desktop mode the default view on Safari for iPad. If you don’t see web pages loading in desktop mode, you need to do a similar setting tweak (as we did on iPhone) on iPad.
Step 1: Open iPad Settings.
Step 2: Go to the Safari app.
Step 3: Select the Desktop Site Request option.
Step 4: Enable the switch from the following menu.
Disable Content Blocker
In some cases, you may have problems loading websites in desktop mode on your iPhone. This behavior may be due to content blocker in Safari browser.
Safari on iPhone and iPad does not support content blockers, and some websites may not allow you to browse articles with content blockers enabled. You need to disable your content blocker and try reloading the site.
Step 1: Launch the iPhone Settings app.
Step 2: Scroll down to Safari.
Step 3: Find Extensions from the General menu.
Step 4: Check the installed ad blocker. Touch it.
Step 5: Disable it from the following menu.
If you want to prevent Safari from using content blockers on a specific site, you can do so from the same extensions menu.
Step 1: When you get an error loading a web page in Safari, tap the extension menu in the address bar.
Step 2: Open Site Settings.
Step 3: Turn off Use Content Blocker switch.

When you request a desktop site on iPhone, the entire reading experience on a small screen can be below average.
You can enable Safari’s built-in reader mode and turn off all distractions during web browsing. Here’s how you can use reader mode in Safari on iPhone and iPad.
Step 1: Launch Safari on your iPhone or iPad and load the web pages you want to read.
Step 2: If you don’t want to see all unnecessary elements on the page anymore, tap the reading mode icon in the address bar.
And Voila! You are ready to read articles in a better environment. You can change the font and even change the background color in Safari reader mode.
Read articles in Desktop Sites
Now that Apple allows users to change the default browser on iPhone and iPad, many people prefer to use Microsoft Edge as their preferred browser on iPhone. Safari users can go through the steps above to request a desktop site. The experience can be quite cumbersome for iPhone users with small screens.
