How to Turn off Contact Joined Notifications on Telegram

Changes to WhatsApp’s User Policy are causing some people to switch to the Telegram app. Meanwhile, Telegram users keep getting ‘Contact has joined Telegram’ message and it’s annoying when you get more than 10-20 notifications daily. So, if you want to turn off such contact notifications from Telegram, there is a way but it is very difficult.

The overall process can be broken down into several parts – turn off notifications, disable pop-up chat threads and mark chats as unread/delete unread chats. We’ve covered them all here. You can only do the first one or some of them. It depends on your needs and preferences on how you want to use Telegram.

Who gets notified when you join Telegram

Any Telegram user who has your number saved in their phone contacts will be notified that you have joined Telegram. It doesn’t matter if you save their number or not. There is no way to join Telegram without notifying others unless they have turned off notifications or your number is not saved in their contacts.

You may see a contact message to join in Telegram from random contacts. It happened because you allowed Telegram to access your phone contacts. Basically those ‘random contacts’ are actually saved in your contact list and you may have forgotten about them by now. We recommend going through your contacts from your phone’s Contacts app to view them.

How to stop notifications for Telegram messages that have joined a contact

Telegram provides a way to turn off notifications. However, the following method will only disable push notifications. It does not prevent Telegram from creating a new chat. For that, check the ‘how to unsync contacts from Telegram’ section.

Note: When you turn off notifications on one device, it does not mean that the same thing will change on all devices where you are using Telegram. If you use Telegram on more than one device, you should disable notifications on all devices separately.

Here’s how to do it on Android and iOS.

Turn off joined contact notifications on Android

Step 1: Launch Telegram app on your Android phone.

Step 2: Tap the three-bar icon at the top. Select Settings from the menu.

Step 3: Tap Notifications and Sounds.

Step 4: Scroll down to the Events section. Turn off the toggle next to ‘Contact joined Telegram.’

Turn off joined contact notifications on iOS

Step 1: Open Telegram app on your iPhone.

Step 2: Tap Settings at the bottom. In Settings, tap Notifications and Sounds.

Step 3: Scroll down and you will find ‘New Contacts’. Switch off.

What is contact synchronization and how to disable contact synchronization in Telegram

As mentioned before, disabling contact conversion will only stop the notification, not the chat thread. To prevent Telegram from automatically creating new chat threads for new entrants, you will have to prevent contacts from syncing with Telegram. A feature called Contact Sync is available in Telegram settings for that.

Basically, Telegram needs to sync your phone contacts to show them in the app. Syncing contacts makes Telegram visible on all your devices using Telegram. If you don’t have sync enabled, you won’t be able to access your own phone contacts on Telegram. That is, you will not see your contacts in the Telegram list. Here’s what the New Messages screen looks like with no contacts synced to Telegram:

Note: In the screenshot above, I also deleted all the contacts previously synced with Telegram. Existing chats will not be affected.

Now, you must be wondering how to chat with new Telegram users then? Yes, that’s the limitation. You will have to add them manually with their number or username. When added with a number, the contact will be saved as a Telegram contact. Think of it as a separate contact list that can be accessed from all the devices you are logged into Telegram from.

Note: If you disable Contacts Sync, nothing will happen to previously synced contacts or chat threads. You can still message your existing contacts normally because you just turned off sync, preventing new contacts from syncing.

How to mark all chats as read in Telegram

If the green (1) icon next to new chats annoys you on Telegram, you can mark all chats as read.

To do so on Android, open Telegram Settings. Scroll down on the Settings screen until you see the version number. Touch and hold it. You’ll see a ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ emoji pop-up. Touch and hold the version number. A pop-up menu will appear. Tap Read all chats.

On iPhone, go to the Chats tab. Tap the Edit icon at the top. Then tap Read All.

How to delete multiple chat threads in Telegram

If you want to take it a step further, you can delete newly created chat threads from the Telegram home screen. That will give you a cleaner interface.

To do so on Android, touch and hold any chat thread. Then tap the other chats you want to delete to select them. Once you’ve selected the chats, tap the Delete icon at the top.

On iPhone, tap the Edit option in the Chats tab. Then select the chat thread you want to delete. Tap the Delete option.

Get rid of unwanted notifications

Currently, Telegram does not provide a direct way to stop creating new chat threads. We really hope Telegram will introduce a better way to prevent annoying contacts from joining Telegram notifications in the future.
