How to Record Your Screen with Built-In Screen Recorder

Windows 10 comes with a built-in screen recording tool. It’s one of those things that Microsoft doesn’t really advertise or advertise. It’s pretty well hidden. Officially, it’s Game DVR, to record gameplay. But it does record video from the window you point to, along with audio, so that means you can use it to record almost any type of activity on your PC.

This may be the easiest way to record tutorial, lesson, or bug reports.

But before you get too excited, you should know that this tool is not for professionals. Or even electricity users. There are no separate controls for audio and video, you can’t even specify basic settings for video recording. If you want control, you should use apps like Camtasia. All this is, is a built-in tool to use when you don’t really want/can’t use third party software.

Let’s see how it’s done.

How to use Game DVR in Windows 10

As I said above, this option is very well hidden. You bring it up by pressing the shortcut Windows + WOOD. When you bring it up after selecting a non-game window, it behaves suspiciously. You need to tick the box that says “Yes, this is a game” in order to continue.

Then you will see the Game DVR bar. This is a floating bar you can move anywhere you want.

The most obvious part of the equation is the big red record button. Click on it and the application will start recording the foreground window.

Note: It will not record the entire screen. App only. So if you want to record a game, you’re better off running in windowed mode instead of full screen.

While the app is recording, you will see a floating stopwatch at the top right. The game bar will disappear. Use keyboard shortcuts Windows + WOOD to show it again and click Take note button to stop recording.

You can also take screenshots while recording using Windows+Alt+PrtScr movie off.

After you stop recording, the app will automatically create a video and save it to this computer -> Videotapes -> take a shot.
