How to Delay, Block Software Updates in Windows 10

Windows 10 has mandatory updates. Because, and I don’t mean to be sarcastic, updates are great for your computer. Most of them are critical security updates, and with new exploits happening weekly, updates are quickly becoming more important than ever. And this time, Windows is being very smart about it. It will automatically download updates but will only install it at times when you’re not using your computer – like 3am.

While security updates are great, not all updates are created equal. Driver updates sometimes screw up your work or fail. In addition, you may be using a limited internet connection and sometimes you cannot afford to download several hundred MB of updates. In times like these, there are essentially ways to delay or block specific updates. But if you’re running the Home edition of Windows 10, you can’t turn off Windows 10 updates forever (for Pro edition users, there’s a solution).

Fake It with Metered Connection

When you mark a connection as “measured,” Windows thinks it’s not a broadband connection – you’re probably tethering from your phone or you’re using a limited internet connection. Metered connectivity means that Windows will delay downloading and installing updates when connected to that network.

But the problem is here, I can only find this setting when Wi-Fi is on. If you are using Ethernet, there is no way to fool Microsoft. They know you’re on a network that can download updates from. For desktop users, you will need to take more drastic measures, as described below.

Disable Updates Using the Troubleshooter

Microsoft itself provides a utility to disable Windows 10 updates. The main use of the utility is to prevent the installation of drivers that can cause problems for one’s Windows 10 system. It happens more often than you’d like. But in the same tool, Microsoft offers the option to turn off Windows 10 mandatory security updates.

Download the file from here. Since this is a “troubleshooter”, you need to click the “Run” button and it will scan for problems. Then it will show two options – Hide updates And Show hidden updates.

Troubleshooter 1

Click Hide updates. Basically, Windows won’t install hidden updates. Choose one and click Hide.

Hide updates

Here you will see available updates. Choose one and click Next. That particular update will be hidden. If you want to enable updates, run the troubleshooter again and select Show hidden updates.

This will not work if you are using Windows 10 Home edition. If you’re running a Professional, Enterprise, or Education edition, you’ll have access to the Group Policy Editor.

To get there, press Windows + CHEAP to display the Run box, type gpedit.msc and press Enter.
