How to Play Media on Your Apple TV Using VLC Player

The very popular VLC media player recently launched with a free app for Apple TV that allows you to stream various media files on your computer directly to your Apple TV for display there. VLC is very popular because it allows playback of many such formats. That’s especially helpful for Apple products, because they can sometimes try to limit media playback to content only within Apple’s ecosystem like iTunes and iCloud.

With the VLC app, you can display audio, video, and photos soon. Supported formats include M4A, MP3, WAV, WMA, OGG, MP4, WMV, FLV, QuickTime, etc. If that interests you, don’t waste your time downloading the free VLC app for Apple TV to start linking your computer (PC or Mac) to the TV app.

Download VLC App for Apple TV

To download the VLC Player app for Apple TV, you’ll have to turn on your Apple TV, go to the App Store, and manually search. Unfortunately, Apple doesn’t currently provide a way to link to apps for Apple TV, so we can’t link to it here. Search for “VLC” with your remote and it should appear pretty quickly.

Tip: Alternatively, you can download the VLC mobile app for iPhone or iPad linked to the Apple TV app. Then, in the Apple TV App Store, go to bought to see that VLC has also been added to the cloud for free download here.

Bring media to your Apple TV

VLC offers several ways to access media files and display them on your Apple TV from using your local network to a network stream via tedious URL input. But by far the easiest way is to use what VLC calls Remote Playback. This is what will link the files on your Mac or PC to the Apple TV.

Important: First, you’ll need to make sure that your Apple TV and the computer where your media files are located are both connected to the same Wi-Fi network, preferably a private network. Otherwise, this method does not work.

Next, launch the VLC app and flip through Remote playback tab at the top. If it’s not already activated, be sure to click Turn on remote playback below the menu. On it, you will see two different URLs. The first one is what we’re interested in — it’s an IP address.

Enter that IP address into your computer’s web browser and load the page. As you’ll see, that’s where you can upload files from your computer to stream through to your Apple TV. You can copy and paste the URL from an existing media file on the Internet, drag and drop the file into the window, or click a button. More in the top right to browse for one.

As soon as you upload the file, it will start playing on your Apple TV. And that’s it — keep sending files to your Apple TV through the magical and magical VLC Player as you wish. They will also save in the app for later playback.
