Easily Set Gmail, Yahoo or Hotmail as Default Email With GmailDefaultMaker

In a previous article, I discussed with you about changing your default email client in Firefox and Internet Explorer. While changing the default email client for Firefox, one can choose Gmail and Yahoo Mail as its preferred default services in addition to other Windows-based clients, but no such provision is available in Internet Explorer or any other popular modern browser.

Luckily, there’s a tool called GmailDefaultMaker that can help you do the essentials on any browser in a jiffy.

GmailDefaultMaker is a nifty freeware that sets the email service of your choice as the default mailto: client. One of the best features of this tool is that it is very fast and lightweight as it doesn’t run any kind of background service that eats up memory unnecessarily.

This is a install and forget category app and does not come with any kind of user interface. All you need to do is download the installer and run it. At the time of installation, the program will ask you to specify your default mail service. Select any of Gmail, Yahoo, AOL, Hotmail and Google Apps and complete the installation.

From now on, whenever you click on any mailto: hyperlink, you will be redirected to the compose window of the specified mail service.

If you are using Internet Explorer as your default email client, you will be alerted with some security dialogs as shown below. Just check the Don’t show me warnings again for this program option and click the allow button.

There is one small problem though. If at any time in the future you want to change your default email client there is no direct way to do so. You will have to uninstall and reinstall the app and choose a different service provider.

To uninstall the app, type “uninstall gmail” and then run uninstall GmailDefaultMaker.

Alternatively, if you ever want to revert to the default Windows email client, you can simply uninstall the app.

Note: The program does not change your default email program for Windows. It just redirects your mailto: hyperlink across browsers to your favorite online mail client.

My judgment

GmailDefaultMaker does exactly what it claims to do. It’s a great tool that can easily set your favorite email provider as the default email client on various browsers. With it, you can do the trick on any browser without digging into its configuration menus. The only thing that bothers me is the name of the app. Do you think it’s biased.. I mean why only Gmail in the name? ????
