With iOS 7, Apple made a big foray into the world of mobile gaming. iOS has been the leader in console quality and

but last year Apple went one step further to dominate the field. It officially released support for third parties

remote controll

included in iOS 7. Before that, you had to download jailbreak tweaks and manually map the buttons to play the game with your controller.

Currently, there are many certified Apple controllers available in the market and some of them are not half as bad. The library of games compatible with MFi (Made For iPhone) controllers is growing, but they still cost around $100. That’s a bit steep for a controller.

Fear not though, because the game lords of the jailbreak world have brought us a great tweak that allows us to pair the controller most of us already have, the Dual Shock 3 (support for Dual Shock 4 and other controllers coming soon) with any iOS device. If you’ve ever tried playing an FPS game on your iPad with touch controls, you’ll really appreciate what this tweak has to offer.

How to Connect a Controller to Your iPhone or iPad

First, make sure you’re running iOS 7, jailbroken, and have Cydia installed. Next, add the Modmyi repo (apt.modmyi.com) if you haven’t already. Now search for “Controllers for All”. This add-on costs $1.99, totally worth the money if you ask me.

Once you’ve downloaded and installed Controller For All, we need to pair the PS3 controller with your iOS device.

For this you will need a Mac or PC. I was on a Mac and it took less than a minute. Here’s how it happens.

For Macs:

  • Download the Sixaxis utility from here.
  • Connect your PS3 controller via USB and do the same for your iOS device.
  • Once connected, launch Sixaxis, click the button that says Pair the controller with iPad and you’re done.

For computers:

The process here is on the same lines:

  • First you need to download and install SixasixPairTool from here.
  • Connect your PS3 controller and iOS device to your PC
  • Now, run SixasixPairTool and tap the Bluetooth address on your iOS device (you can find it in Settings > General > About > Bluetooth).
  • Then click Updatedisconnect your controller and you’re done!

Once you’ve done that, you’ll need to go into settings and disable Bluetooth as Controllers for All uses BTstack.

Now all that’s left to do is fire up an MFi-compatible game and wait for a message asking you to press the PS button. There are a lot of really good games like Asphalt 8, Into The Dead, Angry Birds Go, Riptide GP2 and many more that have instant controller support. For a complete list, see this page.
