A virtual private network (or VPN service for short) is a way to connect to the web securely. While at first mainly used by businesses to
connect to remote control
data centers,
VPN
are now very popular among individuals mainly because they allow you to access content and websites that may not be available in your particular region, such as Hulu.
However, not every Mac user is familiar with VPNs, and since there are many ways to connect to one, it can be a little intimidating at times.
So here is a short tutorial on how to do this.
Access VPN through native app
There are a number of online services that offer free and secure VPN connections. Usually, however, these services also offer paid plans, which means that their free plans come with time or bandwidth limitations.
Even so, in most cases they are more than enough to safely browse the web for a few days.
The advantage of these services (such as HotSpot Shield or Hideman, for example) is that they offer standalone applications for Mac that allow you to enable or disable your VPN connection with a single click. All you have to do is download the app and connect to the service.
Manual VPN Access
However, in some cases, some users may want to access their VPN manually. For starters, this method, although it takes longer to set up, is much faster after that and you also don’t have to depend on third-party apps that may not work properly.
Additionally, there are some situations where a dedicated app won’t be available, such as when accessing a work VPN. All of the services that offer dedicated VPN apps also provide everything you need to manually connect on a Mac, so there’s really no excuse not to learn how to do it.
Here is the process:
Step 1: On your Mac, open Interest control panel and click Network icon. There, in the lower part of the left panel, click the “+” to add a new connection.
Step 2: On the slide-down panel, select the following:
- Interface: VPN (since this is the service we will be using)
- VPN type: Depending on the connection type, you should choose L2TP (more secure) or PPTP
- Service Name: Name your VPN any way you want.
Once done, click Create to create a new connection.
Step 3: Now select new connection on the left panel and fill the following in the required fields.
- Configuration: Default (you can add different profiles for each server, just like having multiple profiles for the same account, but most of the time just one is enough)
- Server address: Use the VPN’s provided IP or domain name.
- Account Name: Here, use the ‘username’ provided by the VPN
Step 4: Click on the . icon Authentication settings… and a new panel will slide down. There, select Password and then enter the one provided by your VPN service. When ready, click ALRIGHT.
Step 5: Now, click High level… to see other options. Down here Session Optionsyou will have to check the checkbox next to Send all traffic over VPN connection. This ensures that all browsers from then on go through your VPN server.
Step 6: Now, back to the main network window, don’t forget to select Show VPN status in menu bar option to easily access your connection from anywhere on your Mac.
