How To Pin Steam, Origin Games to Windows 10 Start Menu

Windows 10 has many new features for gamers, the most prominent of which is DirectX 12 support. For my part, I find that it is also better optimized for games (at least the games I have played). . My BF3 runs smoothly at over 90fps on 4GB RAM, while on Windows 8.1 it stutters at 25-50fps on the same frame. It also has a redesigned Start menu. But the panes for the Windows Store and News & Sports look ugly to me and are hardly ever used.

To make them useful and not ugly, we showed you how to create your own custom tiles using TileCreator for Windows 10 and OblyTile for Windows 8.1. Taking a page from that, I wonder if games can be stacked in such a way. Curious readers might point out that right click on the game icon and select Pin to get started will do the job, but it looks terrible. Just try it and you will agree with me.

There’s a better way to do it and we’ll see how.

Create custom tiles with Win10Tile

This nifty little app, created by XDA user Flinston_Ger, simplifies the process of creating custom tiles for the Start menu. You don’t have to mess around with two different apps for the tiles to work. One downside to it is that it requires the latest build of Windows 10, which is update 1511, build 10586, released in November 2015. To check if you have this update, go to press Windows key + CHEAP > type winner inside Run dialog > check if build number is 10586.

If you don’t have the latest build, you’ll have to use the old custom cell generation method.

Step 1: Download Win10Tile from here. Once downloaded, copy all the contents of the downloaded zip file into a folder and save that folder in a suitable location.

Step 2: Open the app by double clicking on MyTile.exe. It will list all the shortcuts it finds inside the following locations:

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

C:\Users\USERNAME>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

This also means that it will only list the programs installed in C: drive. To work around this limitation, go to the game or program installation folder, right click the .exe file > Create shortcut. Copy this newly created shortcut and paste it in one of the two locations above.

Step 3: Relaunch the app and your shortcut will appear in the list. Select it and choose an image to your liking. To find images for games that you can use in the tiles, you can find them here or here. Or do a Google search and the image editor is simply your friend. The resolution of the images doesn’t matter but just remember that they need to be square to look good.

Other options are to display a dark or light label and set a background color for the tile. The application uses HTML color codes and here is a

Pin different games and more

Previously, you would launch the game from the desktop or the Start menu. But companies started messing with that by introducing launchers. It would be great if they all used the superior Steam engine today, but that’s not happening either. So now we have Origin and Uplay along with Steam.

SteamTile for Steam Games

If you just pin a game on Steam using the above method, it will launch Steam instead of the game. SteamTile ignores it and launches the game directly. Also, you don’t need to create tiles in Win10Tile. SteamTile does that too.

Step 1: Install SteamTile from here.

Step 2: SteamTiles gets information about Steam games from your profile page, so you need to make changes in your Steam account first.

Steam Profile Settings

Log in to your account and go to Edit Profile > My informationset your custom URL. Next, you need to make your Steam profile public by going to Edit Profile > My privacy settings.

Step 3: Open SteamTiles and enter the custom URL you set in the previous step. All games in your Steam library will load. To pin a specific game, hover over it.

It gets complicated for the origin

For Steam, SteamTiles took care of all the hard work, but for Origin we’ll need to take a few more steps. However, if you don’t mind accessing the Origin client no further setup is required, just follow the steps for Win10Tile, otherwise follow the methods below.

Result to ignore origin

The result is an app that bypasses Origin by simulating the login and game launch process. A few weeks ago it worked with all games but the recent Battlelog update broke it for battlelog games (BF3, BF4, MOHW & BFH). So let’s see how to set up the Result for the rest of the game.

Note:

Step 1: Download Outcome from here and install it.

Step 2: Launch Result and it will ask you for your Root credentials click Remember my login information so you don’t have to enter them every time you launch the app.

Login information

Step 3: It will notify you after successful login and patch some files and notify you again when it is ready.

Step 4: Launch any Origin game and it should work without Origin. If not, try patching the files again by right-clicking the Result icon on the taskbar > Patch the file.

Battlelogium for the game Battlelog

Battlelog game cannot launch directly because many core parts of game like server browser, in-game stats page etc are part of Battlelog. When you launch a Battlelog game it opens a browser window and when you join a server or play single player it launches Origin and then the game starts. We’ll automate some of that using Battlelogium, an application that kicks off Battlelog and Origin in a standalone window, separate from the browser.

No setup required, just download from here and get started. You will get the same battlelog screen as in the browser. In addition, it also supports Steam overlays and in-house streaming for BF3 & BF4 games.

Uplay is still a pain in you know what!

I’m not criticizing Uplay personally, here are two examples (1,2) of the extent to which gamers don’t like it. It is a shared feeling. Uplay not only does not work well, but it also crashes or freezes the system. On top of that, it forces the very gamers who bought a Ubisoft game from Steam. As you might have guessed above, you can stack the game’s .exe file but you’ll have to go through Uplay.

What is your take?

Some of you may wonder if the effort is worth it, but when you look at the end result, shown right from the start, you’ll be pleased. And as a gamer, I was very pleased.
