I find it puzzling that even in this age of smartphones with powerful mobile operating systems, managing contacts (and their safety) on phones is still almost as cumbersome as it used to be when they stored in the SIM card. Sometimes I think it’s much easier to have a contact like you see in the picture here.
As you may know, apart from the contacts stored in the phone memory in the usual way, Android devices can sync contacts from various sources like Google, Twitter, Facebook, etc. add-ons like email addresses, contact pictures, etc., without manual effort by the user, they brought in the threat of redundancy.
You will most likely have two or more different contact records for a person, one containing the email address and primary number while the other contains the work number and contact picture.
Today we are going to see how to merge these duplicate contacts to make the data uniform across your device as well as across your online contacts database, be it Google Contacts or anything else. what else.
1. Merge duplicates on Google Contacts
If you are using Google Contacts to save your Android contacts, merging the copies is a very easy task. Open the Google Contacts homepage on your computer browser and sign in with the Google account used on the Android device. Having done that, click My Contacts on the left sidebar to load all the contacts you have on your connected devices.
Select the group of contacts that you want to scan for duplicates and select the contacts. To search in all select all items click merge button and click option Find and merge duplicates.
Google will immediately scan through the contacts and display the results. If no duplicate contacts are found, it will speak out. However, if it finds duplicate contacts, it will group and display them all in a pop-up and ask which contacts you want to merge.
Although cross-verification is not required, you still have to see what all the contacts are about to be merged and then click merge button to make changes. The contacts will be merged and the next time your phone syncs, all changes will be reflected on the device.
2. Merge contacts in phone memory
However, if you don’t use Google to save your contacts but use the local phone storage, the merging of contacts will have to be done on the phone using the app. There are many free apps that can detect and remove duplicate contacts but to merge them effectively there are only a few good ones. Go Contacts EX is one such app to accomplish the task.
Go Contacts Ex is basically Android’s master contact dialer and manager, but we’ll be using its search and merge feature to find duplicate contacts.
Once installed, launch Go Contact EX (UPDATE: This app is no longer available) and choose Merge from options. The app will ask you the primary field for duplicate analysis and return a list of contacts with duplicates. One can now review and merge each contact.
You can switch between search parameters by pressing the menu button and selecting the desired option. You can also try Go Contact EX as an alternative dialer and stock contact manager. I find this feature rich and smooth when compared to the old one.
Note: Go Contacts EX doesn’t offer silent background contact bulk merge, but if you really want that, Contact Remover Plus is a premium app ($2.99) dedicated to this task. .
