Chromebooks don’t run standard Windows or Mac programs (without a little help). That doesn’t mean you can’t customize your app. Keeping your apps organized reduces clutter and helps you stay organized and productive.

Create an application group in a folder
Keeping all your apps in one inefficient place. Instead, create app pools just like you would on your mobile device. The process is similar on your Chromebook. From the All Apps view in the Launcher, drag one app on top of another.
This creates a folder with those two apps. Click on that folder and you’ll see Unnamed Folders at the top. Add a meaningful name for that folder. To add more apps to the folder, drag them above the icon.
If you want to remove an app from a folder, drag it out of the folder circle.
Create apps instead of bookmarks on shelves
Since many Chromebook apps are just web pages, bookmarking them all becomes a challenge. You can turn any website into an app on your Chromebook. When you’re on a website that you want to turn into an app, select the hamburger menu in the upper right corner. Go to More Tools->Add to Shelf. You will name your app at that point. I usually leave it as the default name unless it’s not very descriptive of the site.
If you choose Open as window, the web page will not run in the Chrome browser. That reduces the temptation to browse to other sites.

After creating the app, you can unpin the app from the shelf. Right-click the icon on the shelf and select Unpin. The app will remain in the Launcher. To remove an app from your Chromebook, right-click the icon and select Remove from Chrome…
You can add more app icons to the shelf by right-clicking on them in the Launcher and choosing Unpin from Shelf.
Use Search as Launcher
Even if you create groups and icons for your apps, you can still waste time searching for what you want. The Chromebook search box in the Launcher works just like Spotlight on Mac and the Start Menu on Windows. After you start typing, the Launcher will start looking for related apps. Oddly enough, though it won’t find the application folders. Saying “Ok Google” will also not find the app.

Decide if you want your apps to sync across devices
I use Chrome on every device I have: Mac, PC, Android, iOS, and Chromebook. I don’t always want the same things on my Mac Chrome installed on my Chromebook.
By default, your Chromebook will sync all your information with your account. If you click on Settings->People->Advanced sync settings. Instead of Syncing Everything, you can disable apps and extensions. That ensures my Chromebook experience is separate from my other devices.

If you organize your app folders, by default they won’t sync with other devices. If you use multiple Chromebooks, you may want those Chromebooks to be synced with Google. That way, any Chromebook you sign in with will have your content. To enable this, type chrome://flags in the Address Bar. Then find the flag labeled enable-sync-app-list and select enabled.
Chromebooks may not be able to run all the full-featured programs of other operating systems. That’s an advantage in many ways because it’s easy to customize app features and make your Chromebook experience unique.
