How to Make Evernote More Secure With Two-Step Verification

It is important to keep our online accounts secure. An easy way to do this is to fortify your password – a harder password makes it less likely that someone can guess it and gain access to your account. However, an even easier and much more secure task is to enable two-step verification. This means that two steps are required before logging in to your account: Password and verification code. One of the services that allows for this kind of security is Evernote.

We’ll see how to enable Two-Step Verification in Evernote just like we did with Gmail. It’s really easy, so the steps don’t take long. It’s best to enable this feature so that when you sign in, Evernote will ask for your password as well as your code. The code can be sent to you via text message, or you can use what they call a “backup code”.

Turn on two-step verification

Step 1: Sign in to Evernote and open privacy settings. Here’s a direct link to these settings here.

Step 2: Press Allow to start the Two-Step Verification setup process.

Step 3: Press Continue on the first page. This is simply an introduction to what Two-Step Verification security settings will do for you.

Step 4: Since we’re setting up a two-step process, you’ll need two things each time you try to access your account: Your password and a verification or backup code.

Press Continue to continue, as this is another pure information window.

Step 5: To begin the process of setting up Two-Step Verification settings, you will first receive an email from Evernote. Do this by pressing Send Verification Email on the next screen.

Step 6: Press Verify email address to confirm your account.

Step 7: Now enter your mobile number in the text box to allow Evernote to send you a text message with a verification code whenever you try to log in to your account.

Evernote will send you a text message when you tap Continue. Enter this code in the following text area.

You can then optionally set up a backup phone after your primary phone, but this is not required.

Step 8: Now you have to download the Google Authenticator app on your mobile.

iOS users can download the app here. Android users, here and BlackBerry users can get it using this link.

Then open the app and click Continue with iOSor one of the other two buttons to continue the setup.

Step 9: Now open the barcode scanner application you see on your computer screen. Now enter a time-sensitive, barcode-generated code for each of your email accounts. This is a unique code that will expire in a moment, so you must enter it quickly or wait for another code.

Step 10: Now Evernote will provide you with 4 backup codes to use in case the verification code cannot be entered. You should keep these codes away from your phone because if you can’t access the verification codes on your phone, you won’t have these backup codes either.

Click Continue and then confirm that you have kept these codes by entering one of the strings, like this:

From this point on, you’ll be asked to provide a code sent via text message when you need to sign in to Evernote.

You can easily disable the above steps by reopening the privacy settings and selecting Turn off two-step verification.
