Sometimes, simple photos seem boring. Say, you want to make a birthday video for a friend, but you don’t have the actual video footage. In such situations, you can take the help of photographs.
That is, you can create videos from still images by adding music and effects. You may be wondering what huge tool you will need to download to create such a video. Well, get ready to be surprised because you don’t have to install anything.
The application that allows you to create this application comes pre-installed on your Windows 10 computer. We’re talking about the Photos app. Yes, the app comes with a great video editor that will help you create video slideshows with images.
So let’s start the fun.
Create Video by Adding Image and Sound
You can create videos in two ways in the Photos app — automatic and manual methods.
1. Automatically create videos in Photos app
If you don’t want to spend a lot of time creating videos, Microsoft will take care of that. All you need to do is select a photo and it will automatically create a video for you.
Here’s how to go about it.
Step 1: Launch the Photos app on your Windows 10 PC.
Step 2: If your photo shows up in the Photos app, go directly to step 3. If you don’t see the photo, click Import in the top-left corner, then click From Folder. Then add the folder containing your photos. Don’t worry if it has extra pictures or if it’s missing some. We can always add and remove them later.
Step 3: Once you have your photo, click on the New Video option present at the top. From the menu, select Automatic Video.
Step 4: Now, select the photo where you want to make a video. You can select individual photos by clicking on them or using the Select All feature.
Step 5: Click Create, once you have selected the photo.
Step 6: You will be asked to name your video. Give it an appropriate name. That will be used as the title of your video. You can rename it later.
Step 7: Your music video will be ready. Tap the play icon to start playing it. If you don’t like the layout, use the remix button to try other themes with different music and text styles.
If you are satisfied with what Microsoft offers you, press the Export or Share button to save the video. However, if you want to change something in the video, click Edit Video (more on this below).
2. Create Videos from scratch in Photos App
In case you want to style your own video, click the New Video option followed by New Video Project on the Photos app home screen. Name your video.
You will now be provided with a blank template with different sections — project gallery, storyboard, and video preview. While the project library will contain all the selected photos and videos, the storyboard will only contain the photos and videos you want in your video. You can always drag and drop files from the project library onto your storyboard.
Now click the Add button in the Projects gallery to add photos and videos. If the photo is available in the Photos app, click From my gallery. Otherwise, select From This PC and navigate to the files you want to add.
If you want the selected files to be added to the storyboard, click the Put in storyboard option. Alternatively, select the files and drag them to the storyboard. Once you do that, you can click the play button and your video will start playing. However, it won’t have any effects or sounds. To add them, you must edit the video.
Edit video
Here are some parameters that can be modified:
Length of each clip
By default, each photo will stay on screen in the video for 3 seconds represented by 3.0 text on each photo.
You can increase or decrease the time for each clip. For that, right click on each photo in the storyboard and select Duration. Alternatively, click the photo once and hit the Duration option.
Then, choose the duration in the dialog that pops up. You can also set a custom time. Unfortunately, you’ll need to do it individually for all files.
Resize photo
If the size of the image does not match the orientation, the image will have a black border around it. To remove those, right-click the photo and select Resize, then select Remove Black Bars. The photo will be slightly enlarged to remove the border.
More filters
Video editor gives you the ability to add effects to your photos while creating videos. To add effects to a photo, click on it and tap the Filter option. Alternatively, right-click the photo and select Edit, then Filters.
You will be taken to the edit screen. Click a filter to apply it to the photo. Click Done to save. Repeat the steps for the other images.
Insert text
To add text to your photo, click on it and hit the Text option.
On the next screen, enter your text in the text box on the right. Then select the text style and position. After adding text, you can even change the length of the text using the blue slider at the bottom. Click Done to save it.
Add camera movement
Adding camera movement is important if you’re creating a video using only images and want to give your video a real feel. To do so, click on the photo and hit the Motion option. Then select the motion effect on the next screen. Click Done to save the changes.
Add 3D effect
To further enhance your videos, you can add 3D effects to them like fireworks, breaking news, leaves, etc. To do that, click on the photo and tap the 3D effect option.
On the next screen, select the 3D effect of your choice to add it to the photo. Use the slider at the bottom to change the duration of the effect. Click the Edit tab in the right sidebar to change the volume of the effect. Click Done to apply the changes.

Direction change
If you’re creating a video for Instagram, you’ll need a 4:3 aspect ratio. In the Photos app, you can switch between 16:9, 4:3, portrait, and landscape orientations. To do that, click on the three dots icon in the top right corner and hover over the orientation option. You can then choose the one you want.
Add title tag
To determine the gist of a video, you can add a title to it. For that, click on the Add title tag option. By default, it will be added before the photo where you clicked Add title tag. You can change its position by dragging it.
To change the properties of the title tag, click it once and select the desired options such as background, text, and duration. Then modify them according to your needs.
Change the position of the photo
Just because you’ve added photos in a certain order doesn’t mean you can’t rearrange them. Just drag them to change their position.
Remove image
If you don’t want a specific photo to be part of your video, click it once in the storyboard and hit the delete icon.
more music
You can add two types of sounds in the Photos app. First, you can choose from the available audio files provided by Microsoft in the Background Music section. Second, if you want to add your own music or narration, select the Custom Audio option.
Remember that background music is added to the entire video while audio added via Custom Audio only applies to individual clips.
Save Video
Finally, when you are done editing the video, click the Export Video option to save it again. Then you will have to choose the video size. Choose one that you like. The video will be saved on This PC > Photos > Exported Videos.
