How to Fix Windows Clipboard Not Working on Windows 10

The clipboard is a central part of any ecosystem, be it a phone or a PC. It works quietly in the background and ensures that all your Ctrl+X and Ctrl+V keystrokes work as expected. And with the advent of Windows 10’s Cloud Clipboard, this native feature got a much-needed boost.

Now you can not only sync your copied text across connected devices, but also act as a convenient clipboard manager.

That means the clipboard can now store a bunch of your copied text. And needless to say, this alleviates problems associated with regular copy-paste work, where you can easily lose copied text if your system reboots suddenly. Or worse, if you mistakenly copied another piece of text (or image).

But in some cases, as I recently discovered, Windows 10’s Cloud Clipboard feature doesn’t work as expected. Sometimes the clipboard refuses to show up when needed. Or worse, the clipboard refuses to sync with your connected devices.

Thankfully, this isn’t something you can’t fix.

So, just in case your Windows 10 Clipboard manager is not working as expected, here are some tips that you can follow.

Note: The Cloud Clipboard feature won’t be available if you haven’t upgraded to the October 2018 Update.

1. Turn on Clipboard History

I know, you might have checked this out. But again, a second check doesn’t hurt either. To check if clipboard history is enabled, go to Settings > System and click the Clipboard option on the left menu.

If the Clipboard history button is disabled, turn it on. Please note that when this option is disabled, your system will only be able to paste the most recent item to the clipboard and you will not be able to access your clipboard history.

Once enabled, run a test by pressing Windows key + V keyboard shortcut. If it’s a simple issue of clipboard history not working, this simple tweak will solve it.

Also check the sync feature to see if it’s enabled by default. You have to convert it manually. To do that, you need to sign in to the system with your Microsoft Account. If you haven’t already done that, click on the Sign in option and add your account.

2. See Group Policy

Another common problem with Cloud Clipboard is the Sync feature. Ideally, if you use the same account on two devices (such as a tablet or PC), the items in the clipboard will sync between both devices. But as expected, it is rarely scripted.

So, if the above trick doesn’t solve your problem, it’s time to dig a little deeper into the advanced settings aka Group Policy.

If you must know, Windows Group Policy has many advanced settings that can be tweaked to tweak the settings on the local computer, as long as you know how to use them.

Step 1: To summon the Group Policy window, search for Gpedit.msc in the Start Menu.

Step 5: Next, click the Next Setting button and then click the Enabled button. Once done, click OK. You’ll then be able to see Clipboard content synced between devices using the same Microsoft account.

3. Check registry value

Doing the above will also reflect the same on your Registry. But if that’s the case, you might want to edit the Registry’s values. As you may already know, the Windows Registry contains all the settings and configurations used by your Windows system.

Therefore, any changes made in it must be done with the utmost care. And if possible, back up the defaults before making any changes.

Step 1: After you back up, open the Start menu and search for regedit.exe and press the Enter button when you find it.

Copy Paste like a Pro

For the most part Copy and paste is like muscle memory. You see a piece of text and your fingers immediately move to Ctrl+X and Ctrl+V. Therefore, it can be really annoying when the system only remembers recent combinations and forgets about old combinations.

Hopefully, the above methods have worked just as well for you, as they did for us.
