How to Install Windows 10 on a Mac Using Boot Camp

If you’re looking for an authentic Windows experience on a Mac, Boot Camp is the way to go. Yes, you can use a virtual machine like VirtualBox or Parallels but for now you are just running Windows.. in a window.

Title Boot Camp Windows 10

When you Boot Camp, you create a separate partition for Windows formatted to Windows specifications, you can install apps without any problems, and your Mac essentially turns into a PC . And let me tell you, a Mac is the best piece of hardware to run Windows on. And Boot Camp-ing into one couldn’t be easier. Seriously, it’s a breeze. In addition to the time it takes to download Windows support data (depending on your PC), you should finish in 30 minutes. So if you have a fast enough internet connection and the Windows 10 ISO file is ready, you’ll be going from OS X to booting into Windows 10 in less than 30 minutes.

And Mac takes care of everything. Drivers, which are often the biggest problem when installing Windows even on hardware designed for Windows, aren’t the problem here at all. Boot Camp Helper will install all relevant drivers after Windows 10 starts. I mean, I’ve had a worse experience upgrading Windows on Windows hardware.

Ok, let’s get started.

Mac computer

What Boot Camp means: When you install Windows 10 using Boot Camp, you are installing it in a separate partition. OS X will still be there. You’re essentially dual-booting OS X and Windows 10 this way. An important thing to note here is that since both partitions will be formatted differently, by default they will not be able to read or share data between their partitions.

TL; DR – Here’s what you need to know

If you’re not going to read the whole thing, here are some pointers to keep in mind.

  • Back up your Mac with Time Machine before you begin. Or back up important files with Dropbox.
  • You will need a USB drive with at least 8 GB of free space.
  • You will need to download the 64-bit version of the Windows 10 ISO file from the Microsoft website. (32-bit won’t work).
  • You’ll need a product key to activate Windows 10. You can skip this step, though, until Windows 10 is set up.
  • It may take a long time to create a bootable USB. Relax, do push-ups, read all our Windows 10 articles in the meantime.
  • While going through the Windows 10 installer, the Boot Camp drive will need to be formatted.
  • Once done, keep Select key immediately after booting (when you hear the chime) to bring up the boot menu. From here you can choose which partition to boot from.

Getting Started with Boot Camp

The Boot Camp Assistant app itself helps you create a bootable USB drive for Windows 10. Open Spotlight, type Boot Camp Assistant and select the application. Or find it from utilities folder in Applications.

Step 5: Now comes the tricky part. Wait. Here, Boot Camp will create a bootable drive and will download the latest Windows-enabled applications. Depending on your internet connection, this process may take a long time. On my 3.5 Mbps connection, it took about 1 hour. So be patient and don’t exit the process even if the progress bar is stuck for a long time.

Step 6: When the drive is ready, you will be asked to enter the password.

Step 3: It will switch to the driver installation section. Once done, click Complete.

That’s it, Windows 10 is set up. Go to the Windows Store app and sign in with your Microsoft ID. If you don’t have one, create it. You’ll need it to use great features like Cortana.

Customize Windows 10: Now that you have Windows 10 installed, it’s time to customize the Start screen the way you want and learn about Mission Control like window management in Windows 10. Plus, you’ll want to know how switch the default browser from Microsoft Edge to Google Chrome (this is not as clear as it should be).

Also, this is Windows, so keep in mind that the Command key is now the Windows key. And the Control key is now the Control key in Windows (equivalent to the Command key in OS X).
