How to Download and Play Google Drive Videos on iPhone

Apple iPhone comes with only 5GB of iCloud storage. That’s why most users prefer Google Drive to share and download files from iPhone. In addition, Google Drive offers 15 GB of free space and has native apps for Windows and Android. So it’s easier to store and view photos and videos on your iPhone.

The Google Drive iPhone app lets you view the details of your videos and gives you a basic player to view them. To enjoy those videos to the fullest, you want to download them to your iPhone. However, Google Drive doesn’t let you save those videos directly to the Photos app. We will show you how to download and play any video file from Google Drive on your iPhone.

Use Default Google Drive Video Player

Google Drive supports all major video file types like MP4, MKV, and MOV. The application has a default video player with full functions such as forward/backward, play/pause and AirPlay.

Step 1: Open Google Drive on iPhone. Find any video from Drive folder.

Step 2: Press the play button. Google Drive will download the video from the server to play on your phone.

Step 4: Drive will open the iOS share menu once the download is finished.

You can directly share a video on Google Drive on IM (instant messaging) apps, email it via Mail or Outlook, or even upload it to another cloud storage like OneDrive.

Step 5: Click ‘Save to Files’ to save the video to the Files app on iPhone.

Step 6: Save the video to the desired location in the Files app. You can also add tags to filter downloaded videos easily.

Open the Files app on your iPhone and your downloaded video is ready to go.

Save videos on Google Drive to the Photos app on iPhone

Due to a complex and rather confusing iOS behavior, you can’t download Google Drive videos right in the Photos app. The Share menu on iOS won’t show an option to save photos or videos to the Photos app on iPhone. You’ll need to first download the video to the Files app and save it to the Photos app. This is the way.

Step 1: Download videos from Google Drive to the Files app (refer to the steps above).

Step 2: Open the Files app on your iPhone. Long press on a video and select Share from the context menu.

Step 3: Tap ‘Save Video’ from the iOS share menu.

Use VLC Player to watch videos on Google Drive on iPhone

The iPhone’s default Files and Photos app doesn’t support all video files. For example, you cannot play MKV video files in the Photos app. If you plan to download MKV videos from Google Drive, you must use a third-party video player to view them on your iPhone.

Step 1: Download and install VLC player on iPhone using the link below.

Step 2: Save the video on Google Drive to the Files app (refer to the steps above).

Unlike VLC on Android, VLC for iPhone will not scan and display all videos from your device’s storage. You must open the video manually from the Files app. Continue with the steps below.

Step 3: Open the Files app on your iPhone. Find the downloaded video in the Files app.

Step 4: Long press a video and select Share from the context menu.

Step 5: Select VLC from the iOS share sheet.

Step 6: The system will open the video in VLC player.

You can enjoy all the conveniences of VLC like a feature-rich media player, subtitles, screen recording, custom playlists, and volume gestures.

Enjoy Videos on Google Drive on iPhone

You can always play videos on Google Drive using the default video player. If you want to edit or share videos, save them to the Photos app. For mkv and other unsupported video file types, get help from VLC on iPhone.
