GIMP is one of the best free image editing tools you can get on Windows 10. It packs a lot of great features that allow you to do everything from remove the background from an image to use it. layers to add multiple elements to any image. One of the best things about using GIMP is that it uses the FreeType 2 font engine which includes support for a wide variety of fonts that you can add to your images.
And while you can easily get font packages from various sources on the web, you may have trouble installing them in GIMP. So, if you want to use third-party fonts in your images, you’ve come to the right place. In this article, I will show you how you can easily install fonts in GIMP to use them in your projects.
How to install fonts in GIMP on Windows 10
So the first thing you need to do is download a third-party font for GIMP. Sites like dafont and wfonts are great resources where you can find a wide variety of fonts for the platform. If you like a few particular fonts but don’t know their names, you can use Chrome extensions to identify the font.
To download a new font, simply visit one of the free font websites and click the download link.

Once you have the file on your system, just follow these simple steps to install fonts in GIMP:
Step 1: Double-click the zip file to open it.
Step 2: Then extract the files inside by clicking the Extract button in the file archiver of your choice. Or if you’re just using the built-in File Explorer, you can drag and drop files to a location of your choice.
Step 3: Right click on the OTF or TTF file and then hover your cursor over Open With to display all available options.
Step 4: Select Windows Font Viewer from the following drop-down menu.
Step 5: Click Install in the top right corner of Windows Font Viewer to install the font.
That will install the font in Windows, which means that any program that uses an OTP or TTF font (including GIMP) can use it.
Step 6: Open GIMP and select the Fonts tab on the right toolbar. Then search for the font you just added.
Step 7: If the font doesn’t appear, you can click the little tab configuration button in the top right corner, then select Rescan Font List from within the Font Menu.
The newly added font will appear in the list. Alternatively, you can also right-click anywhere in the list to bring up the Rescan option, or you can simply click the green refresh arrow at the bottom of the list.
However, it is possible that the font still does not appear in the list. If that’s the case, then you’ll need to manually add it to the GIMP fonts folder. Here’s how you can do it:
Step 1: Copy the TTF font file you want to add to GIMP using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+C.
Step 2: Navigate to the fonts folder.
C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\share\gimp\2.0\fonts
Step 3: Paste the font file into it with the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + V and grant admin rights.
After the font file is copied, open GIMP again and refresh the font list. The newly added font will appear in the list.
Note: I have tested this workaround with GIMP v.2.10.8 on Windows 10. In case you are using a different version of software, you can visit the Advanced User forum to find the solution.
The best part about using this method to install fonts in GIMP is that it allows you to install multiple fonts at once. You just need to copy all the TTF or OTF files and paste them in the folder mentioned above. Simple isn’t it?
