In Google Docs, footnotes and footnotes share similarities with citations and references to provide additional information for a specific part of the document. Using endnotes or footnotes in a Google Doc file prevents body text from appearing long.
Although footnotes and footnotes provide similar features, they are a little different. While footnotes appear at the bottom of each page, footnotes appear on the last page of the paper. You use footnotes when you don’t want to interrupt the reader’s flow with your comments, explanations, or references. With this in mind, let’s discuss how to insert comments in Google Docs.
Insert comments in Google Docs
You can insert Footnotes in both the Google Docs web and mobile apps. Here is how it works.
Add annotations in Google Docs using a web page
When using the web version of Google Docs in a preferred browser, here are the steps to insert footnotes:
Step 1: Launch the Google Docs file.
Step 2: Place the mouse pointer on the text to insert footnotes. The number will appear at this location.
Step 3: Go to the menu tab and select Insert, then click Footnote, this will automatically take you to the bottom of the current page.
Step 4: You will see the caption number at the bottom of the page. Enter information for the footnote that you want to insert.
If you need to remove the footnote, simply select the footnote number in the body of the text and press the backspace or delete key. After you do this, footnotes will automatically be removed from the bottom of that page. It also adjusts all other footnotes on the document to reflect the updated numbering.
Add Footnotes in Google Docs for Mobile
This includes iPhone, iPad and Android. Here’s what you should do to insert footnotes on the Google Docs mobile app:
Step 1: Launch the Google Docs file on your phone.
Step 2: Click the edit icon in the lower right corner of the screen.
Step 3: Click on the text where you need to add a footnote.
Step 4: Click the + sign at the top, then select Footnote from the list of options.
Step 5: Enter text for your caption.
Step 6: Zoom out and tap the check mark.
Your footnote will appear at the bottom of the page with the footnote number in the text.
How to format footnotes
If you want to use a certain font style or size, you can format the footnote. Here’s how to do so:
Step 1: Scroll to the bottom of the Google Docs page where the footnotes are located.
Step 2: Highlight the footnote and on the Ribbon, select the font, font style, font size.
Step 3: If you have multiple footnotes and you want to repeat the same formatting for all, highlight the first formatted footnote and click Paint format.
Step 4: On subsequent annotations, drag your cursor over the caption texts.
How to Insert Comments in Google Docs
Google Docs does not allow automatic caption insertion. However, you can turn footnotes into footnotes by downloading the plugin from AddOn. Here is how it works.
Step 1: On your Google Docs file, click Add-ons.
Step 2: Click Get Add-on from the drop-down menu.
Step 3: In the search app bar, type Endnote and press Enter on your keyboard.
Step 4: Select any endnote add-on. In this case, we will use Endnote Generator.
Step 5: Select Install and grant all necessary permissions.
Step 6: Once the add-on is done installing, close the window and click Add-ons from your Google Docs Ribbon.
Step 7: Click Endnote Generator, then run.
Step 8: On the right side of your Google Docs page, select Create and this will convert all existing footnotes into footnotes.
Add citations and bibliography
If you want to list resources used or referenced when creating a Google Doc file, citations and bibliographies work better than footnotes or footnotes. Citations can also be converted to footnotes using Explore on Google Docs.
