Sometimes, when you download a file from the internet, it takes a long time. You think internet speed could be an issue. However, if it continues to happen frequently, you may want to measure your connection speed and even monitor it. But how does one do it? In this post, we tell you how to test internet speed on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android.
You can measure your internet speed if you are experiencing network problems or if you feel you are not getting the exact speed your provider promises.
So check out how to know internet speed on any device. But before that, let’s first understand how speed is measured.
How to measure Internet speed
Internet speed can confuse users. If we started our post directly with how to measure internet speed, you would even think that your speed is wrong. But not so. Once you understand how to measure speed, you will stop cursing your Internet service provider (ISP) for lying to you.
For starters, there is a difference between the speed offered by your internet provider and the actual download speed. Most internet providers show speeds in Mbps or Mbps. Note that b is small. That is quite important. Now, if you download something, you will notice that the download speed will have a capital B, i.e. it will be MBps or MB/s.
One would think that there shouldn’t be any difference between these two. But that is wrong. There is a huge difference. The small b in Mbps stands for bits, while the uppercase B in MBps stands for Byte. The rest of the letters are the same, i.e. M = mega, p = per and s = seconds.
Technically, a bit is the smallest unit of storage or data. So 8 bits make up 1 byte. Alternatively you could say 1 byte has 8 bits. That means, 1MB = 8Mb. As a result, your actual internet speed will be lower than the speed displayed by your provider.
Fun fact: By default, files and memory size are usually displayed in MB.
So, if your internet provider says you have 20Mbps internet speed, you need to divide it by 8 to get the actual speed in MB. That is 20MBps ÷ 8 = 2.5MBps. Your real download speed is 2.5MBps. Simply put, your promised internet speed ÷ 8 = actual speed.
If you want to convert the download speed or actual speed shown in MB to the speed provided by your provider i.e. Mb, you should multiply it by 8. So the actual speed * 8 = internet speed. In fact, both speeds are the same. The difference lies in the way they are represented.
Most tachometers show speed in Mbps. But if you’re using a download manager, you’ll have to convert the speed to MB to get real results. In short, the higher the Mb/s number, the faster your internet connection.
Now that you know how to accurately read your internet speed, it’s time to measure it.

- Speed Test Internet Speed Test (iOS)
Note: When you use the speed monitor, it checks the speed of the currently connected network. That is, if you are using Wi-Fi, its speed will be determined. In case you want to test your mobile data speed, turn off Wi-Fi.
How to display Internet speed continuously on Windows and Android
Instead of opening an app or website to test your internet speed over and over, you can monitor it from the taskbar on Windows and the status bar in Android. Both download and upload speeds will be displayed.
We have covered this topic in detail for Windows and Android. Learn how to show internet speed on Windows taskbar and on Android status bar.
