How to Declutter Facebook Feed

The Facebook feed is where most of the action happens. That’s where we get updates from friends, groups, and pages. It also displays content that Facebook thinks users may like based on data they have collected about us through their use of our social media platform. Slowly but surely, the Facebook feed becomes cluttered with updates and content that we don’t want to see or even find remotely interesting. So how do we declare the Facebook feed?

Facebook’s algorithm tries its best to please us and does a lot of things right, too. There’s a reason people end up mindlessly scrolling through their feeds more than they should, but a lot of users aren’t satisfied. They want to see less updates from certain people/groups/sources and more from others. We have a few suggestions that will help clear up some of the Facebook feed mess you’re witnessing.

Let’s get started.

1. Unfriend some people

Not everyone on your friends list is your friend. Some of them may not be friends anymore. Some of them are acquaintances or former colleagues who no longer work with you. You should go through your friends list and unfriend those you can. Don’t worry, and they won’t get a notification either.

There are two ways to unfriend someone on Facebook. The first is where you go to his/her profile, click the Friends button and select Unfriend.

This will take time as you will have to access individual records. A much quicker way is to open your profile page by clicking on your profile picture and selecting the Friends tab.

Here you will find a list of all your friends. Just click on the three-dot menu icon and unfriend them.

2. Stop following or take a break with friends

You can’t unfriend everyone, but you can pause viewing their feed. Facebook offers two distinct features that will help declutter your feed significantly. One is Unfollow and the other is Rest.

Basically, what you’re saying is that we’re still friends, but I don’t want to hear from you for a while because your interests don’t match mine. You’ll still be friends on Facebook, but won’t receive updates in your feed when they post cute pet photos or images with motivational quotes.

3. Snooze for 30 days

Another way to decipher your Facebook feed is to snooze your profile for 30 days. When you snooze the alarm clock, it means you are delaying the alarm and the alarm will snooze after a set amount of time. In the case of Facebook, when you snooze a profile, you stop receiving updates from them in your feed.

You’ll still be friends, texting each other, checking each other’s profiles and doing everything else. It’s just that you won’t see updates from them in your feed. When the 30 days are over, you’ll be notified and start reviewing updates. You can snooze anyone from the feed itself by opening the three-dot menu icon.

4. Hide Posts

A lot of times, your friends will share posts or updates from the pages they’re following, but you won’t. You still see these updates in your Facebook feed because you’re a friend of the person who shared the update.

Click on the three-dot menu and you will see two options. Hide posts and Hide all from ‘page name’. Selecting the first option tells Facebook that you want to ‘See fewer posts like this’. Selecting the second option will hide all posts from that particular Facebook Page. The Hide option does exactly what it says and works on profiles, pages, and groups.

5. Dislike Facebook Groups

There’s a Facebook group for anything and everywhere. Over time, things can get out of control and some users end up getting so many updates from these pages that they don’t even remember following. This is a good time to go through the list and unfollow some of them.

Maybe you don’t like that team anymore or live in another city and don’t want to know what’s going on in the old city. Either way, open the Facebook Group and click the Liked button to unlike it.

6. Change the group’s tracking settings

Not ready to give up that Facebook page? Still want to monitor but in a more controlled way? Fortunately, Facebook allows users to control how and when a page pushes posts to your Facebook feed. Click the three-dot menu icon on the Facebook group page and select Tracking Settings.

  • Favorites – posts from this page will be prioritized and will be shown higher in your news feed
  • Default – posts will be shown as they arrive
  • Snooze – as discussed earlier, you won’t see any posts for the next 30 days
  • Off – you will never see any posts again
