How to Get Notified About CyanogenMod Updates

If you’re rocking a custom ROM, it’s probably CyanogenMod. A few years back CM was known for its revolutionary features. It will take Android’s open source codebase and make it really powerful by adding editing, productivity and security features. That’s still happening, but more than that, CM is now known for its reliability and extensive device support. CyanogenMod now officially supports over 200 devices and many more are unofficially supported by passionate developers. CM is installed on millions of smartphones worldwide.

And if you’re using CM, you’re probably using it nightly. It’s very rare for non-Nexus devices to see stable releases that often. So if you want to stay away from bugs and get the latest features, nightly is the best choice. That’s true for me on my OnePlus One. When CM finally fixed the OnePlus One’s touchscreen problem, it was only in a nightly form.

But if you are new to CM, you may not be familiar with this OTA update process. Learn how to be a pro almost always having the latest CM automatically downloaded every night while saving significant download sizes.

Install CyanogenMod Update

By default, CM is not set to check for updates daily. You can change that from Setting -> About phone -> Update CyanogenMod -> Check for updates. After you select Daily/Weekly, you will get a notification when a new ROM is available. Just tap the notification, start the download and then tap the same button to flash the ROM.

Dirty flashing: This is probably as close as we can get to dirty jumping. Once you’ve installed CM and you’re updating to the nightly update through the restore process, you don’t need to perform the usual system data wipe. You can just wipe cache and Dalvic cache and flash a new ROM. I usually clear the cache again after flashing the zip. But keep in mind that you can only do this when it’s an incremental update. Switching major versions of Android usually requires a clean install. You should visit the ROM’s XDA thread for instructions on doing this.

Delta Nightlies Auto Download

CM Downloader is an app that will automatically check the latest CM nightly/monthly/stable builds and also download them for you automatically. It’s a popular app used by hundreds of thousands of users, and they’re ready to help you by rating it nightly. So if one night has a problem, you will know about it before flashing. The app also displays a changelog for each new update.

This is not a simple app so set it up properly first.

Open the app, tap the three-dot menu button and select Setting. inside size update optionally, you will see that it says Delta. This means the app won’t download the entire 200MB zip file at a time. It will analyze your current ROM and only download the changes. This means that your updates should now be around 30MB in size. From Released for download you can switch from nightly to the stable release if you want.

The option to download only over Wi-Fi is selected by default and you should leave it that way. There are also settings to check for new builds at a certain time.

Setting New build behavior found is the important one. By default, the app will only show notifications. But you can also tell the app to automatically download delta updates.

The app will also flash the zip code for you. If you upgrade to the AdFree version, you can schedule flashing times, choose backups, and more. I’m out of date and I prefer manual flashing so these settings didn’t work for me.

Once that’s done, go back to the app’s home screen and tap Quicken at the bottom right. You will see the latest details nightly. Touch Download and the app will ask if you have the zip file for the nightly downloaded app currently installed. If you do, locate it. Otherwise, let the app download the entire nightly for you. A full version of nightly is required as the app builds delta updates based on that.

An alternative to CMFinder is CynDelta. It will also let you download delta updates but this is a much simpler app and doesn’t have the pro features that CM downloader has.
