How To Mirror an Android Display to a PC or TV

Mirror Beta

If you’ve ever been in a situation where you needed to display some content from your Android phone on a big screen or TV, what would you do? You usually just need to send the content to the connected PC/Mac. That works most of the time.

But what if you can’t send it? Or rather you don’t have to? Well, if you’re running Android 4.4.2 KitKat or later (tested on Lollipop), there are two ways to do this. One is by using the Chrome app for PC or Mac and the other is by using Chromecast connected to the TV.

Use to mirror Android phone to PC or TV

  • Display photos and videos on the big screen
  • No need to send content anywhere
  • Easily interact with content. Your phone is your remote control
  • Show how your app works or performs on the big screen
  • Browse the web on the big screen

Mirror Android to PC with Mirror Beta

Mirror screen

Mirror Beta is an app by Koushik Dutta, creator of Clockwork Mod recovery and AllCast app. The app is still in beta and if you are using KitKat you will need root access for the app to work. On Lollipop root is not necessary.

On your PC/Mac, download the AllCast Receiver app for Chrome and launch it. On your Android phone, open the Mirror Beta app and make sure both devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

The Chrome application will appear on the screen. Click on it to start mirroring. In a few seconds, the Android screen will show up in the AllCast Receiver window. You will see there is a watermark in the bottom right corner. The app is currently free and in beta. There doesn’t seem to be a way to remove that watermark.

Test Notes: I have tested the app on Lollipop and I cannot run it on KitKat. But the experience on Lollipop is very smooth. It’s so smooth that I can mirror YouTube videos with very little lag. Unfortunately, since this is only screen mirroring, sound is still coming from the phone.

Cast Android Screen to TV with Chromecast

Chromecast Mirroring

The Chromecast is a $35 HDMI dongle that you can attach to your TV (or in my case, a monitor) to turn it into a media receiver and transmitter when connected to Wi-Fi.

Android phones running KitKat 4.4.2 or later can mirror (cast) their Android phone to a display connected to Chromecast. Of course, this feature is also in beta and it is only optimized for Nexus devices. I got warnings about this during setup but I didn’t have any major performance issues. If you’re on Lollipop, you’ll get better results.

To get started, download the Chromecast app and connect to your local Chromecast. Press the menu button and select Screen transmission. Ignore the warning, choose your Chromecast and viola, your Android screen now shows up on your big screen TV.

You can do anything here. Switch to landscape mode, play YouTube videos. Since this is “casting” not “mirroring”, even the audio in a YouTube video travels to the TV.
