We now have a periscope lens with 10x zoom, a microscope lens that magnifies small objects, and a portrait mode for clicking images like a DSLR. While there are a number of phones with these capabilities, the iPhone continues to excel in terms of video recording.
The iPhone camera is considered one of the easiest to use for video recording. Additionally, the iPhone’s Photos app has basic video editing tools like video cropping. Also, if you have shot in landscape orientation but if you think it will look better in portrait mode, you can consider rotating the video. And it’s not too difficult.
Here’s how to rotate a video on your iPhone.
Types of rotation
Before we get into how you can rotate videos on your iPhone, it’s important to discuss aspect ratios. If your recorded video is in portrait orientation, the aspect ratio will be 9:16. On the other hand, if your recorded video is in landscape orientation, the aspect ratio will be 16:9.
The reason this is important is that you can fully rotate the video while changing the aspect ratio, or rotate the content of the video while keeping the aspect ratio unchanged. The first form of rotation – video rotation and aspect ratio – is more common. You can use it to upload your videos to specific platforms that display vertical videos like Tik Tok or Instagram Reels.
How to rotate a video on your iPhone
This is where things come to life when shooting video. Remember that you always have the option to roll back all the changes you have made. However, we hope you haven’t pressed the Done button before.
Rotate video with aspect ratio
Rotating the video and changing the aspect ratio accordingly is quite simple and straightforward. It can be done directly from the Photos app on iOS. Here’s how to do it.
Step 1: Open the Photos app on your iPhone and navigate to the video that you want to rotate.
Step 2: Click the Edit button at the bottom right.
Step 3: Select the crop icon in the lower right corner.
Step 4: Use the rotate button (square with arrow) in the upper left corner to rotate the video 90 degrees. The rotation takes place in an anti-clockwise direction, so keep pressing the button until the desired angle is reached.
Step 5: You can also use the flip button in the top left corner to mirror the video.
Step 6: Once you’ve made all the changes, tap Done. iOS will then save the video in the Photos app.
The video we used for this example was originally shot in landscape orientation with an aspect ratio of 16:9. After rotating the video to the vertical position, the aspect ratio changed to 9:16. Clips can now be uploaded as vertical videos.
However, if you want to keep the video in landscape orientation and only rotate the content, you will need to use the next method.
Rotate the video while keeping the same aspect ratio
Video cannot be rotated while keeping the same aspect ratio through the Photos app. To do that, we will need the help of the iMovie application. Although it comes pre-loaded on your iPhone, you can reinstall it if you removed it.
Step 1: Open the iMovie app on your iPhone.
Step 2: Select the Movie option in Start a new project.
Step 3: From the media list, select the video you want to send.
Step 4: Select the Create Movie option at the bottom.
The video will appear in the iMovie app with a frame-by-frame timeline in the bottom half.
Step 5: Tap the timeline to select a video.
Step 6: Place two fingers on the screen in the video preview display. Rotate your fingers in the direction you want to rotate the video.
Step 7: You will see a rotate icon show up when you do this. Release your finger when you see it.
While that will rotate the video preview, it won’t appear in the same aspect ratio as the original clip. Fortunately, you can change that.
Step 8: Select the small magnifying glass in the top right corner of the video preview to activate Pinch to Zoom.
Step 9: Pinch your fingers out to zoom in on the clip. Zoom in until the area you want stands out.
Step 10: Tap Done in the top left corner.
iOS will take a second or two to save the video and will display the video with a default title like My Movie 1. You can press the Edit button and change it.
Step 11: Click the Share icon at the bottom.
Step 12: Select Save Video.
Wait for video output. When the process is complete, select OK on the prompt.
Open the Photos app and navigate to the saved video. You’ll see that even though the video’s content has been rotated, it’s still in landscape orientation with a 16:9 aspect ratio.
You can rotate a video on your iPhone depending on how you want to do it and for what purpose. With content consumption on the rise, basic video editing skills like rotating a video are always good, especially on a device like an iPhone that you carry around with you all the time.
