For many of us, the browser is the gateway to the internet. Most Android phones come with Google’s Chrome browser pre-installed. If your phone runs a stock non-Android firmware, chances are your phone will also have a different browser.
For example, Samsung phones come with Samsung Browser pre-installed, and phones running MIUI offer Mi Browser in addition to Chrome.
If Chrome browser doesn’t suit your choice, Mi Browser is a good alternative. However, Mi Browser has its downsides. Case in point: annoying news feeds. If it annoys you every time you open a tab, you can turn it off. We will tell you how to do it and maintain your sanity. Let’s get started.
Why Turn off the News Feed
When you open Mi Browser, this is what the start page looks like:
Who would want such an overwhelming tab? And it’s not just a single start page, but every new tab has a news feed — Hey Mi, I never asked for a news feed! The news feed is annoying and gaudy. That’s not the end of the challenge; it is also heavy on data usage. Opening a new tab refreshes the feed to post new content each time.
Sadly, there is no direct setting to turn off the feed. However, there is a workaround that you need to change the start page to a custom page such as Google or anything else. When you do, that particular page will open for any new tabs.
Now that you know why the news feed should be turned off, here’s how.
Hide news feed
To do so, follow these steps:
Step 1: Open Mi Browser and tap the three-bar icon at the bottom. From the menu, select Settings.
Step 2: Scroll down under Settings and tap Advanced.
Step 3: Click Set Start Page and select Customize.
Step 4: Enter a URL of your choice. I recommend keeping it as www.google.com as it will open the Google search page every time making search easily accessible. It has one more plus — the site is lightweight so it won’t gobble up your data.
Disable Mi . browser notifications
Besides the annoying news feed, Mi Browser also causes another headache. I’m talking about its announcement. This is what the notification panel looks like on my phone:
If you’ve never experienced them, you’re in luck! But for those of you who are going through the painful journey of removing unnecessary notifications from Mi Browser, we are happy to help.
Unlike the news feed, turning off notifications in Mi Browser is a simple process. Here are three methods to do that.
Method 1: From Mi Browser Settings
Step 1: Launch Mi Browser and tap on the three-bar menu. Select Settings from the menu.
Step 2: Tap Notifications and turn off the switch for Notifications on the next screen.
Method 2: From the Notice Board
When a notification comes from the browser, touch and hold the notification right on the notification panel, then turn off the notification toggle.
Method 3: From System Settings
Another way to turn off notifications is to use system settings. Here are the steps to do that:
Step 1: Open Settings on your phone and navigate to Installed Apps.
Step 2: In the Installed Apps section, find the Browser app. Touch it.
Tip:
Step 3: Tap Notifications. Turn off the switch for Show notifications.

Remove Mi Browser as Default Browser: Bring Chrome Back
If you don’t want to use Mi Browser anymore, it’s time to say goodbye to it and switch to our beloved Chrome (or whatever browser you prefer).
There are two ways to remove Mi Browser from default browser. This is both.
Method 1: From Browser Settings
Step 1: Open Mi Browser and go to Settings by tapping on the three-bar menu.
Step 2: Turn off the switch next to Set as default browser.
Method 2: From System Settings
Step 1: Open your phone’s Settings and go to Installed Apps.
Step 2: Tap the three-dot icon in the upper right corner and select Default apps from the menu.
Step 3: Tap on Browser and select the browser of your choice on the next screen.
Note:
Goodbye feed
The feed is not limited to two posts. Scrolling down on the start page will reveal an official feed that supports randomly generated content from various categories like sports, technology, entertainment, etc.
While some people may want to get their daily news feed from this feed, I don’t like it. Changing the homepage bought a new life for Mi Browser.
If you are a Mi fan, they recently launched a cool, lightweight and ad-free browser called Mint Browser. Make it a spin.
