Record and Save Your Macs Audio Output with Hijack

Have you ever listened to an audio file or watched a video on the Internet and wanted to be able to save the audio? Sometimes app and plugin limitations make this impossible. So you end up just bookmarking the link, but that will never let you access the file offline.

A great alternative is to just play the file on your computer and then record your audio output, so record the audio itself. On a Mac, you can do this using a free app called Audio Hijack. It includes several different methods for extracting audio from your playback, so let’s go through the most useful ones.

Record audio from web browser or any application

Open Audio Hijack and click New session at the bottom left. Then choose Web Audio or Audio app sample depending on your purpose. The two are pretty much interchangeable.

You now have three settings to customize before you start recording. First, click Application to select the application you want to record. Browse your computer for the application you want and optionally open an application-specific URL in that application with the beginning of the record. However, for most purposes, that is not necessary.

Next, you can edit the recording settings. For most people, the default MP3 at 256 kbps is perfectly fine. Advanced users can adjust the bitrate, file type, etc. If you’re just casually trying to record something, don’t bother with this part.

Finally, choose your output device and volume. This doesn’t really matter since you’ll be saving the record anyway. Your computer speakers are fine.

Now that you’re all set, tap red Take note button when you are ready. See below for how to save and export your recording once you’re done.

Record audio from all system outputs

Recording audio from all system outputs works almost exactly like the sample above. The only difference is that you can’t choose an app to grab the audio because Audio Hijack will instead take all the pumped audio out of your Mac.

However, try with the output device and recording settings if needed. Then press Take note while the sound is playing to capture it. If audio from multiple applications is playing, this Audio Hijack sample will record all of them.

See below for how to save and export your recording once you’re done.

Optional effects

In the sidebar you will find several collapsible menus for further customization. You can include one or more effects by dragging and dropping them onto the path. Just make sure you drag it to the left of the Output Device.

For example, you can drag in and customize the Volume effect if you want the recording to be louder or smaller. Further down Sound unit effect, you can drag into AUPitch to change the pitch of the recording before saving. Get creative if you want, but the effects are completely optional.

Save and publish recordings

Audio Hijack basically turns the output into input. When you finish recording, the file will save in Audio Hijack. Click record at the bottom to access it.

To quickly export a file, click a record, then click act. Here you can edit it, view it in Finder, or add it to iTunes. Remember to listen in Audio Hijack first or add metadata.
