Tumblr has a bad habit of adding new features to the site that almost no one asks for. And the things that its loyal user base claims to do seem to be ignored. To get around this, a great and free browser extension called XKit is an open source extension framework for Tumblr that can dramatically increase the number of features.

XKit has over 40 small extensions available that will enhance your Tumblr account: add dashboard themes, blog reposts for yourself, blacklist, soft refresh, auto tagging, etc. to get started with XKit, available for Chrome, Firefox and Opera users.
Note: XKit is also available for Safari, but the developer does not provide support for this version.
Install XKit
To install XKit, make sure you’re running Chrome, Firefox, or Opera. Then go to XKit’s Downloads page and follow the instructions to download it, depending on your browser. In Firefox and Opera, click Start Download on the Download page for direct installation. In Chrome, you’ll have to go to the Chrome Web Store and download it from Google instead. Either way, XKit should work the same way in all three browsers.
Before you go back to Tumblr and try using XKit, restart your browser. XKit doesn’t always launch for the first time until you exit the browser and then reopen it.
Use XKit and add extensions
Once XKit is successfully installed, you’ll see a new corresponding icon in Tumblr’s navigation. Click it to open XKit’s dashboard. Four extensions are automatically installed to let you know the potential of XKit: XInbox, One-Click Postage, One-Click Reply and Tweaks.
While two of these are easy to understand, XInbox comes with a number of enhancements to your Tumblr messages, and Tweaks can do everything from reducing block quotes to displaying chat posts by old interface. They are mainly for tweaking Tumblr’s design to your liking. Click on one of the extensions in the sidebar to select or deselect the various features associated with them.
Along the bottom you can navigate XKit. we will skip Get the extension a time. News will keep you updated on any XKit outages or updates. XCloud allows you to sign up for a free account that allows you to sync your XKit settings and extensions across multiple browsers should you ever need to update XKit or have to reinstall. This is highly recommended and doesn’t take long, but you’ll have to install it first. Other And About + Support list only product information and some other advanced options.
Now, back to XKit’s extension library. If you click Get the extension you can see a lot of extensions available for Tumblr. Chances are, any feature you’ve always wanted in Tumblr is waiting for you. This is where you can also find XCloud and install it into your XKit.
Scroll through the extensive list of XKit additions. Each category has a brief description of their function, then click Setting below the ones you want. They should install almost instantly. You can then enable, disable or experiment with the settings of these new extensions in My XKit tab from earlier.
Tumble in Fun
Have fun tweaking and customizing Tumblr to your liking. XKit has such a loyal fan base for a reason.
