If you’re a multi-tasker, you’ll be used to juggling multiple windows on the screen. You may have set up BetterTouchTool and special gestures to snap windows to specific positions. You may also be using Spaces to arrange windows more logically.
But regardless of your multi-window workflow, you still need to arrange windows manually all the time. Or switch between several windows from time to time. Today we are going to talk about an application that will put an end to all these problems. It’s a floating, always up-to-date browser called Helium. This is a free and open source application.
How does helium work?
Once you have downloaded and installed the app, it will show up in the right corner of the screen and you can freely resize or move it. This app is really just a floating window.
If you want to enter the URL, you need to visit Location -> Open website URL and paste in the link. You can also open a video or file from here. You can also drag files into the Helium window.
Helium tops everything, and you can freely interact with the elements below. You can also make the window transparent (Cmd + BILLION). Use keyboard shortcuts Cmd + 1 ARRIVE Cmd + 0 to change the transparency.
Use cases for Helium
Helium uses Safari’s web engine. So opening a website where you are logged in with Helium should work fine. So you can use Helium as an always-on chat window with Facebook Messenger or to watch Hulu, Netflix or any YouTube video.
I think Helium would be great when you need to reference something or when you are copying something from a website. If you’re learning how to code, it’s helpful to always have a video tutorial in the corner of your screen. Better yet upload the app/website you are coding. So you can refresh and view your work easily.
Or you can just use it to watch news or entertainment videos while browsing the web.
