Share Photos, Videos, Voice, Location In iOS 8 Messages App

big hero

SMS is expensive, old school and text-based. Without a carrier, SMS would have been obsolete for a long time. This is one of the few cases where the US lags behind the rest of the world. Countries in Europe and Asia have considered IM chat apps like WhatsApp and Line as their saviors.

But if you live in the US and if most of your acquaintances carry iPhone/iPad, then iMessage is a great alternative. iOS 8 added some pretty cool features. See how we can easily share photos, videos, voice messages and location using the new app.

Share voice notes with iMessage

When you’re chatting with someone who has an iOS device and has iMessage turned on, you’ll see a microphone icon next to the text field. Press and hold the icon and the phone will start recording. When done, swipe up to send, or swipe left to delete the recording.

If the recipient is using iOS 8, the voice note will appear inline with the message, and they can press the play button or lift the phone to their ear to listen. If they’re not using iOS 8, they’ll receive an audio file that they must first download and then play in an app. You can also use voice note features from the quick reply notification window.

Cool Tip: Sending voice notes is great. It is roughly equivalent to modern walkie-talkies. But when you’re in a crowded room, you really don’t want to hear your potentially personal audio notes on the speakers. To solve this problem, iOS 8 has a Raise to listen feature. To enable this feature, go to Setting -> message and below Audio messages guarantee part Raise to listen Enabled.

Quickly share multiple images

The Messages app on iOS 8 is really stepping up the sharing game, and so is photo sharing. Previously, you had to navigate different menus to share photos. Now just tap Camera to the left of the text field and thumbnails of all your most recent photos will appear.

Tap on any of them to select. You can select multiple images as well. Once done, use add comment optional or just send button to send image.

Just like the mic button, if you press and hold the camera icon, it will load the camera right there. You can swipe up to take a photo and send it instantly. And I mean immediately. No commit, no undo – so use this wisely. Swipe right to record video.

Share current location

I told you about great cross-platform apps that allow you to share your location with your friends and track your every move. A basic version is available in the iOS 8 Messages app and is pretty easy to use.

Upload a thread for a contact or group and tap Detail button. Here you will see Submit my current location And Share my location icon.

The Submit my current location option will send your exact location at given time.

The Share my location option that allows you to share your location for an hour, until the end of the day or indefinitely.
