Apple, for the first time, has allowed third-party keyboards in the App Store. And we’ve seen major Android keyboard apps leapfrog the first day. Apps like SwiftKey, Swype, and Fleksy are already available. Then there are cool keyboards that involve emojis or GIFs. You’ll also find seriously productivity-based keyboards like TextExpander 3+.

This opened up a whole new level of customization on iOS, even if it was limited to the keyboard only. Because you see, unlike Android, you still can’t change the app icon, lock screen, or font in iOS 8. But at least you can customize the keyboard however you want.

The following apps are intended for casual users who put funny cases on their iPhones and aren’t too concerned with the improved productivity of Swifkey-like apps. If that sounds like you, read on.

How to enable third-party keyboards

Once the keyboard app of your choice is installed, go to Setting -> overview -> keyboardclick Keyboards options and choose Add new keyboard.

Use Kiwi to customize every aspect of your keyboard

Download and open the Kiwi (Free) app and tap the . icon + button to create your own keyboard. Touch Theme color to change the background color. You can even add more colors and create a rainbow effect.

The great thing about this theme color feature is that it gives you universal rainbow 7 color effect. That means you can create virtually any color possible between the color ranges.

Swipe down and you’ll have an option to choose a background image as your background. But this feature requires $0.99 in-app purchase.

Below you will find an option for Main color. This is where you will need to tread lightly. While your instinct might be to turn everything from letter color to background color into something big, keep in mind that you’ll need to look at this screen and figure out where the letters are to complete a number of input operations.

So make sure you don’t use too many distracting colors in this section.

Once you’ve customized the keyboard the way you want, give it a name and tap the icon Create button. It will show up in the main screen of the application. Tap the keyboard to set it as default.

Use Color Keyboard with Built-in Themes

ColorKeyboard (Free) comes with 3 free themes and 2 themes you can unlock by giving the app a 5 star rating (meaning only if you want).

While ColorKeyboard is not as customizable as Kiwi, it is easier to use. Just like Kiwi, activate the keyboard from Setting and give it full access.

What about the features? Kiwi has a built-in prediction engine but no swipe-to-type. And the keys are also quite small. But you can slide left for the numeric keypad and right for emojis, which is great. ColorKeyboard has large keys but doesn’t have any professional features like predictive text or swipe to type.

If you want an efficient keyboard with customizable colors, check out the options below.

Productivity with custom colors – Fleksy

Fleksy ($0.99) is a gesture-based keyboard and probably one of the best productivity keyboards out there. The great thing is that it comes with 6 free color themes and 6 more unlockable colors.

Free colors like blue and gray look pretty sweet, and Fleksy’s futuristic look is a far cry from any other custom keyboard.

In short

If you want to be completely comfortable with keyboard customization, download Kiwi.

If you’re looking to add a bit of color to your typing experience but don’t want to sacrifice productivity, then Fleksy is for you.
