Google Maps Street View introduced a cool new feature, one that allows you to travel through time (close enough, of course). Basically, you can view available images of a place at different times. The feature is pretty easy to use, as you’ll see in a moment.
How it works?
Well, Google has been collecting a lot of Street View images of great places, some old ones from 2007, so it makes sense for the company to use old images in an interesting way, right? even when new images are always taken.
This feature is similar to a time capsule, as it allows users to see how a place has evolved over the years.
In the case of places where a lot of construction work has been done in the past few years, you can enjoy some spectacular views. In addition, at the site of the disaster, you can see how the area has been restored and how everything is back to normal.
The feature is currently available in a few places (you’ll learn about some of the cool features below), but with Google, it’s likely to get pretty much developed in the coming months. I expect to be one of the coolest features of Google Maps.
Using the new feature really couldn’t be easier. When you’re in Street View, if there’s an old picture of the place you’re visiting, you’ll see a clock icon in the top left corner of the screen that you can click on.
Once done, you’ll see a slider that lets you scroll through different views of that particular place over the years. You will see a snapshot of the area, but if you click on it, the large view will be switched to the view for that particular moment.
It is really easy.

Great places to travel through time
To get you started, I’ve picked up some cool places where you can time travel, with a new feature.
Arena Castelão, Brazil
With the World Cup coming up, would you like to witness the construction of one of the stadiums that will host the tournament? You can do so with the breathtaking views Google has saved for you in Arena Castelão, in Fortaleza, Brazil. The stadium will host matches in groups, round of 16 as well as quarter-finals.
The most recent viewing is from February 2012 and the first one from September 2013, but the difference is quite obvious, as you can see.
Avenue Champs-Élysées, Paris
One of the most beautiful avenues in the world, the Champs-Élysées in Paris is proof that some things have not changed much over time. Pictures are available from 2008, but the place looks bustling and beautiful as always in all of them.
La Sagrada Família, Barcelona
Antoni Gaudi’s masterpiece is still far from complete. Construction began in 1882 and it is estimated that it could be completed in 2026, the centenary of Gaudi’s death.
It’s impossible to say if that will happen, but you can see how La Sagrada Familia’s work has progressed over the past few years, since 2008.
Conclusion
