How to Hibernate Your Desktop PC Automatically On a Schedule

There are many ways to automatically let your desktop hibernate on a schedule. Windows Scheduled Tasks used in conjunction with VBScripts or batch files is intended for geeks. Using software like SmartPower is a solution that will appeal to those with lower tech stats.

SmartPower is a ‘smart’ solution to suspend, hibernate, shut down and wake up your Windows PC according to custom rules you can set up. Hibernation or shutting down your PC is easy to set up and helps save power. SmartPower gives you six configurable rules that dictate the conditions under which your PC hibernates or shuts down. The rules are:

Scheduled On (or Wake Up): Your PC will turn on or wake up at the time you set in this screen. You can choose specific dates and set specific times, or use the default schedule for all days.

Turn on when someone is active: SmartPower recognizes if the computer is idle for a certain period of time and then turns it off or goes into hibernation to save power.

Always on when other devices are on: SmartPower ensures that your PC is always on so that a networked device or any device that is accessing a remote PC can finish its work before it can power off the PC.

Enable when traffic on any network interface exceeds a threshold: Your PC will turn on whenever network traffic on any network interface on your PC exceeds the limit value. For instance, you can use this to complete a torrent download and then turn off your PC.

Turn on when CPU usage exceeds a threshold: If your CPU is active (or the computer is working) and exceeds a certain percentage, the PC will continue to turn on.

Enable when certain processes are running: Enter the process name (or multiple processes) and make sure the PC is not hibernating or shutting down until the process has finished running.

SmartPower, if configured optimally, can save power by waking up the PC only when needed. It is quite a useful tool to use in the network when you do not need to keep the PC on even after the processes have finished running. Remote torrent downloading can be easily set up on a computer, and the PC can go into hibernation once the download is complete.

SmartPower and its role as a hibernate/suspend controller also depends on Windows settings and PC hardware. While it works on most systems, you should pay special attention to the Troubleshooting section on the developer’s website that mentions the settings that need to be configured on your PC for SmartPower to work optimally.
