About Facebook’s New Photo Viewer & How to Go Back to Old One If You Want to

Yesterday, while I was updating Facebook every morning, I clicked on one of the pictures my friend uploaded and as soon as the photo viewer popped up, I had an amazing experience. No, there’s nothing wrong with the photo, what surprised me was the new photo viewer.

The first thing that popped into my head when I saw the new photo viewer was “Isn’t it like a Google+ photo viewer?” and indeed, it was. The new Facebook Photo Viewer has images on the left hand side and all the other information like captions, tags and comments on the right hand side.

Tag Photo and Like button placed on the image itself. I’ve read and heard people get an ad or two in the comments but I haven’t seen any of them.

When you hover over a photo, you can see the next and previous button to navigate through your album. The best thing about the new update is that you don’t have to scroll down to read the comments. User can read all comments without losing the image of the photo.

Cool Tip: Did you know on Chrome you can actually shrink Facebook photos right from your news feed? Well, check out this cool Chrome extension we mentioned to quickly view a photo on Facebook.

The photos are also high resolution and larger in size, thus providing a whole new experience of viewing Facebook snapshots.

How to go back to the old Facebook Photo Viewer

While the old classic Facebook photo viewer isn’t as great as the new version, if you find yourself getting too used to the old version (or if you don’t have a widescreen display that can help you view photos and comments side by side) there are two tricks that will bring back the old photo viewer.

  • When you click the thumbnail of any photo to open it, just remember to press the CTRL key along with the mouse click. This will open the photo in a new tab in the classic photo viewer.
  • If you forgot to press the CTRL button while clicking on the photo, press the F5 button or just refresh the page to see your album in the good old photo viewer.

My judgment

The new Facebook Photo Viewer is a great update if you’re working on a wide screen. Scroll down to see comments that used to annoy me, and I therefore find this new feature to be a huge improvement. While the update looks like a clone of the Google+ photo viewer, I have no complaints.

How do you feel about the new image viewer? Like it or hate it? Share with us your experience of using it in the comments section.
