How To Play/Pause Spotify, YouTube Using Mac’s Media Keys

dsc 0653

I don’t live in the US but I listen to music through Spotify’s web app when I’m writing or just browsing the net. I use the free ad-supported tier because I don’t need access to premium mobile features (podcast FTW) and that’s better than blatant piracy.

Hot Tip: I use the Hola Unblocker Chrome extension to mask my real location in Spotify’s web player. That’s also how I created my Spotify account.

The reason I don’t use Spotify’s great Mac app is because about every week or so I get fired for being “out of a supported country”. I need to reinstall the app and wait for the cat and mouse game to start again. So I finally gave up and settled on web player. I don’t get plugin support but that’s ok.

One thing I greatly miss on the Mac app is the access to the Play/Pause, Next, and Previous keys built into the Mac. When you are listening to music on Spotify/Pandora/Rdio on the web, the tab is usually in the background. I hate having to hunt for it every time I need to pause playback.

That’s why I’m happy to share with you a simple Mac menubar utility that lets you control over a dozen web-based media/music player sites using the method keys. convenience of the Mac. All you need to do is use the keyboard shortcut to make the current tab active, and just like that, the Mac’s media keys take care of the tab playback.

Download the compressed file from the website, use the Mac’s built-in Archive Utility to extract the file, and drag the unzipped application into the folder Applications folder. The first time you open the app, your Mac will give you a default warning. Press only Open.

Hi YouTube: BeardedSpice also supports video sites like YouTube and Vimeo without any performance issues. Scroll to the bottom to see the full list of supported services.

You should now see the BeardedSpice icon in the menu bar. As the name suggests, the logo is a beard and mustache.

Now that BeardedSpice is up and running, go to any supported web-based media player. Click on the menubar widget and you should see the media tab listed.

Click on a website to activate it. A check mark next to the selected website is displayed.

Configure keyboard shortcuts

To make the activation process for the web-based player as fast as possible, BeardedSpice supports keyboard shortcuts. The default keyboard shortcut to enable BeardedSpice is Cmd+F8. The convenient F8 is also the Play/Pause key.

But for some reason I find this shortcut buggy. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Thankfully, you can change the keyboard shortcut.

Click on the BeardedSpice menubar widget and go to Interest. Here click on the space next to Set active tab and enter your preferred keyboard shortcut. I have set mine to cmd+8 because it’s right below the Play/Pause button.
