‘RVC running’ is usually created by software or applications that have not been fully installed or have not been partially uninstalled for some reason. Let’s say you are installing/uninstalling and the operation is aborted midway due to a power failure or system or user abort for some reason. These errors are more common in Lenovo computers.
This error usually appears when you start your computer for the first time and it can be frustrating for you. Sometimes, it simply refuses to go away. Here are some ways to fix the ‘RVC is already running’ error once and for all.
1. Update OS and Applications
The error may appear due to a corrupted file or a recent app update. I recommend updating Windows first. While Windows updates itself very well, you can always check for new updates manually. Press Windows key + I on your keyboard to open Settings and click Update & Security.
In Windows Update, click Check for updates to fetch new updates, if available.
Since this is an application or software related issue, you must also update all installed applications on your computer. If you’re using the Windows Store, it’s super easy. Just open it and click Download and update.
You can view all available updates here and click Get updates to install them all at once.
I recommend rebooting after everything is updated to check if the ‘RVC is still running’ error goes away.
2. Lenovo Easy Camera
Do you see this error on your Lenovo computer? Some users have complained about seeing RTFTrack.exe file errors on their desktop. If the error is genuine, it may be related to the Lenovo EasyCamera driver that supports the webcam device. Realtek has developed the hardware and drivers for it.
If not, it could be malware or a trojan in disguise. Mostly, it should be the former, so let’s deal with that first. We’ll cover malware in a separate point below for simplicity.
First, we will update the drivers. Open Device Manager by searching for it in Windows Search and in Device Imaging, right-click on Lenovo EasyCamera to update the driver.
If the problem persists, use the same menu to select Uninstall device and reinstall the driver using the official Lenovo download page.
3. Lenovo Solutions Center
Lenovo discontinued support for the Lenovo Solution Center, which was later replaced by Lenovo Vantage. Check your PC and if you have an old PC, most likely the error is coming from there. I recommend removing it and downloading a new Lenovo Vantage instead.
4. Bluetooth Device Manager
Few users noticed that the error was related to the Bluetooth device manager. If you are not using any Bluetooth devices, such as a mouse, you can try disabling the relevant drivers. If you are using or intend to use one, try and update the driver.
Open Device Manager and click Bluetooth here. Right-click the Bluetooth device to Update Driver or Disable it, depending on your preference. Restart your PC afterwards to check if it works.
5. Malware or Trojan
If you are already infected, as we discussed before, you will need to tread carefully. There is no ‘one-size-fits-all solution’ here, but a general guideline. If you are using Windows Defender, it is already running and scanning your computer in the background. If you are using anti-virus software, open and perform a full scan immediately no matter how long it takes. See if it finds anything.
At this point, I recommend downloading and scanning your PC with Malwarebytes. The free version is good enough.
Microsoft Safety Scanner is another good app. Always download the latest version of that app instead of using the pre-installed version. They update it almost every week.
Finally, although not required, you can also scan your PC with the Windows Malware Removal Tool. It will scan your computer for rogue applications.
6. Amazon Browser
Have you installed Amazon Silk Browser on Windows? If so, it is known to cause this error. Uninstall the app using Control Panel and reboot to check if the error persists. If not, you can reinstall after finding the cause.
7. Scan SFC and DISM
If you still see the error RVC is already running, I recommend running the SFC and DISM scans. This can fix any known system file errors that are causing the problem. Open Command Prompt with administrator privileges by searching for it in Windows Search.
Run the commands below one by one and then restart your PC to test again.
sfc /scannowDISM /Online /Cleanup images /Health check
8. Clean Boot
In case an application is not working correctly, you will have to perform a clean boot. That will restart your Windows computer with only essential programs. If you no longer see the error, you will have to use the removal process to determine which application is the culprit. Here is a step-by-step guide with screenshots to understand how to perform a clean boot.
Trial and error
It is very difficult to solve an error, especially if you cannot pinpoint the exact cause of said error. That can involve a lot of back and forth, but using one of the solutions above should fix this error permanently.
