MIUI is a fairly popular Android interface from Xiaomi. A lot of users have complained that they couldn’t see notifications on the lock screen when MIUI 10 came out, which also has some useful features like Second Space.
There are several ways to solve this problem that I will discuss in this guide. That should help solve the problem where MIUI lock screen notifications don’t work for most users.
Let’s get started.
1. Update OS and Applications
The first thing you should do is check for any pending updates for your operating system. If it’s an OS related issue, they may have released a patch. To check, open Settings, tap About phone, and then select System update.
Your phone will check for an update and notify you if an update is available
At this point, I also recommend updating all the apps you have installed on your phone by going to the Play Store. Open the Play Store and tap the menu to select My Apps & Games.
Tap Update All to get started and make sure you’re connected to Wi-Fi to avoid unnecessary data charges.
Check if you can get notifications on the lock screen now.
2. Restart
Once you have checked and updated your OS and apps, reboot your Android phone as this little trick is known to be able to solve quite a few smartphone problems.
3. Notification Settings
An option in MIUI allows users to choose whether they want to receive notifications when the phone is locked. Open Settings and scroll a bit to find the Notification & Status Bar.
Make sure that the Display on Lock screen is enabled here. On second thought, Show notification icons should be enabled here as well.
4. App-specific notifications
Do you get notifications for some apps while others don’t appear on the lock screen? If that’s the case, then you’ll need to adjust the app-specific notifications. Go back to Notifications & status and tap App Notifications here.
You will see a list of all the apps that you have installed on your Android mobile. Select the app for which you want to receive notifications on the lock screen. Note that the options for individual apps are different, but you’re looking for notifications on the lock screen. For example, under Boost, tap Reply, message, and mentions to find that option.
When in doubt, check all options to make sure you haven’t missed anything.
5. System Settings
To protect your notifications from prying eyes, MIUI has another feature inside the system settings where you can choose how you want to receive notifications. Open Settings and tap Lock screen & password. Tap Advanced settings here.
Select Turn on lock screen.
That’s where you can decide if you want to receive notifications on the lock screen. If yes, do you want to hide its content? For example, it is useful to protect private messages and calls.
6. Battery Settings & MIUI Optimization
There are two things we need to consider here. One is the battery optimization setting that comes pre-installed on all MIUI smartphones and the other is a third-party app that you may have installed. I will mention the first application because it is not possible to cover all the third-party applications. You will have to test them yourself to make sure they are set correctly.
Open Settings and click Battery & performance. Tap Battery optimization here.
Tap the gear icon at the top right of the screen. Make sure that ‘Turn off mobile data when device is locked’ is set to Never. Also set ‘Clear cache when device is locked’ to Never. That will help avoid any possible conflicts.
Go back and tap Choose app now. Select the app for which you do not receive notifications on the lock screen.
In most cases the Battery Saver option (recommended) is good enough, but if you don’t see the message even after trying everything shared above, I suggest you choose No Limits. limit here to avoid any future conflicts.
7. Autostart
When you restart your phone, some apps don’t start automatically because they don’t have the necessary permissions. To check if an app doesn’t show notifications on the lock screen, go to Settings and tap Manage Apps and select an app.
Toggle Autostart here and check again if you get a notification on the lock screen.
You are my favorite notification
It’s frustrating when you miss an important message, especially if the OS isn’t working as intended. The consequences can be serious in some cases. We’ve come to rely heavily on smartphones and notifications play an important role.
One of the above solutions solved the MIUI lock screen notification not working issue. If not, reset is the only option left.
