Set Google as Default Search in Windows 10 Taskbar

With all the other conveniences that Windows 10 brings to your PC, one thing in particular I’m not comfortable with is Bing search. Use Cortana and search for anything directly from the taskbar search box. Cortana is great, but still has a lot of work to do. It wants you to ask her anything, but most of the times you are redirected to a web search.

Using Cortana is different, but I don’t think about opening Bing to see search results. I always prefer Google or Duck Duck Go and I have my own reasons behind it. However, Microsoft has hard-coded Bing into Windows 10 and there is no way to change the search engine. However, there are a few workarounds by which you can redirect Bing searches to your preferred search engines in Firefox and Chrome.

Let’s see how to achieve that.

For Firefox users

Step 1: The first thing you need to do is install the latest version of Firefox Nightly build. This is necessary as the feature is still in beta and it may take some time before actual releases have them. Even if you’re running Firefox you can go ahead and install the nightly builds, they work great together. After you download the installer file, follow the onscreen steps to complete the setup.

Step 2: When the browser runs for the first time, it will give you the option to set it as the default browser. As I mentioned, it is necessary, so go ahead and set it up. Windows 10 Default program page will open. Go to browser preferences and select Firefox nightly build.

Step 3: Once done with that, restart Firefox and navigate to Tools—> Select and click Search select. You can also type about:preferences#search in the address bar and press enter.

Step 4: Here, you will have the option to manage your search engine. Until the last versions of Firefox, this option was used to change the default settings for the browser itself. But in the nightly build, you can also choose the default browser for Windows. Tick the option Use this search engine to search for the word Windows. You can also set Yahoo! or duck duck go as your default search engine.

Select Search Engine

For Chrome users

There are several extensions like Chrometana and Bing2Google available for the browser that automatically redirect all searches brought to Google. The Bing2Google extension is hard-coded to use Google as the default search engine. But in Chrometana, you can choose Yahoo and Duck Duck Go, just like Chrome.

Search integration throughout Windows, and wherever you click the See more Bing.com option, it will open the browser and search on your favorite search engine.

Conclusion

These are workarounds, of course, until Microsoft releases any official patch to choose the default search engine. But I wouldn’t expect that, it seems very unlikely after all the hard work they’ve put into Bing. What do you think of these unnecessary restrictions? Let’s discuss it in our new discussion forum.
