Microsoft Teams completes the entire circle for those who have invested heavily in Microsoft’s software-as-a-service ecosystem. Plus, Microsoft has decided to discontinue Skype for Business and you should definitely look for a worthy replacement. That’s not the only problem. Other users have complained that Teams won’t load at all or won’t open for them.
While there’s nothing you can do about the first issue, you can take steps to resolve the loading problem. The solution is easy enough to follow.
Let’s get started.
1. Downtime
As discussed in the opening paragraph, servers can be down because so many people around the world rely on Teams to communicate and collaborate on tasks. But how do you know it?
Instead of posting it on Twitter, you can visit Downdetector to check the status of the software. It’s an interesting site that tracks popular apps and services. There is a live outage map with details of the most commonly reported failures. You can also check past events.
2. Known error code
Here are some common error codes that will help you understand the problem in more detail. Do you see any of these error codes on your screen?
- 0xCAA20003 – Authorization problem
- 0xCAA82EE2 – Request timed out
- 0xCAA82EE7 – Hostname unresolved
- 0xCAA20004 – Request not approved
- 0xCAA90018 – Wrong login information
- none – Re-enter pin with smart card
These errors are easy enough to solve and you won’t need my help here.
3. Try different platforms and connections
Troubleshooting can take time and a lot of work to do. This is a quick fix. The Microsoft Teams app is available on the web, desktop, and mobile. Have you tried another platform like Windows, Android or another browser like Firefox?
You should try signing in to Teams with a different internet connection. If it works, then you need to check your firewall and anti-virus settings. Microsoft has created a helpful guide to URLs and IP address ranges for Microsoft Teams and other Microsoft applications. Check them out.
4. Reboot and try again
Close the application and restart your computer once. Save everything so you don’t lose any important data. It won’t take long but is known to help fix some common software-related errors. Relaunch the app and check if Teams still won’t load or open as it should.
5. Sign out
Quite a few users tagged this to work in a Microsoft thread. Worth a try. If Teams crashes before you can do anything on Windows 10, look for the Teams icon in the System Tray area. Does it appear and disappear in a second?
That will take some time and practice but what you need to do is right click on that icon and click sign out. That applies to desktop users. If you’re fast enough, you should sign out/Exit and Teams will load correctly on your next launch.

6. Troubleshooting Team
Press Windows key + I keyboard shortcut to open Settings. Search Find and fix problems with Windows Store Apps in the search box.
From the pop-up window, click the box before the “Apply repair automatically” option and select Next.

7. Uninstall and clear cache and other files
The steps will vary based on the platform where you are experiencing Teams not loading. We want to clear cache and other temporary files. Get started with Windows 10. Quit Teams completely so Teams doesn’t run in the background or even in the System Tray. You can right-click and exit there, or press the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager and cancel the Teams task from there.
Uninstall the app from Control Panel or use a third party app. Press Windows key + E keyboard shortcut to open File Explorer and past this location in the address bar:
%appdata%\Microsoft\teams
In the pop-up, you’ll see that you need to delete before restarting Teams.
- Delete all files in Application Cache > Cache
- Delete all files in blob_storage, Cache, databases, GPUCache, IndexedDB, Local Storage and tmp folders.
Here are the steps for Android users. Open Settings and go to the application list or application management section and search for Teams.
Tap the Clear Data button at the bottom of the screen and select the options one by one.
Reinstall Microsoft Teams. We did it so that the old data and cache didn’t cause trouble while we did a clean reinstall.
Try clearing your browser cache if you have this problem in Chrome browser.
Reinstalling Teams from scratch will also get you up to speed with the latest version. This release may bring some performance improvements and major bug fixes.
8. Reset to Default Location
You can skip this solution if Teams is loading fine until Teams starts randomly working. If you installed Teams for the first time and it doesn’t open or shows a white screen, continue.
Microsoft says that Teams should be installed in the default location of:
C:\users\USERNAME\appData
Most users install the Windows OS in the C: drive, which is where the above folder is located. You’ll have to reinstall Teams in its default location if that’s not the case. Once done, check again if Microsoft Teams is open/loading.
